Heading for Hagerstown, Maryland, Mikey Avila and the SDI Insulation race crew are primed for the Hub City Classic, a.k.a. round six of the AMA Pro Grand National Championship at Hagerstown Speedway, on Saturday, July 7.
“We’re definitely looking to do well here this weekend,” said Avila, who is in his first season of GNC Twins competition. “I took a second last year in the Pro Singles and would love to score a podium finish this time out. We had a rough run at Lima last weekend. Unfortunately the cam gear broke and we couldn’t make the heat race. I was pretty bummed, but it is one of those things that happen in racing and there isn’t anything you can do about it.
“I like the Hagerstown Speedway track,” Avila continued. “It is technical and requires good throttle control. It is one of those tracks that suits my style. Joe Bisha, my tuner, has my Harley ready to run, so things should be good.”
In his rookie season in the highly competitive Pro Twins class, Avila has been racing since he was 4 years old. One of the rising stars of flat track, this California native has more than proved his skill aboard two wheels. Running in the Pro Singles last season, Avila took six wins and four podium finishes to earn second overall.
One of the most popular riders on the circuit, Avila’s professionalism, determination and love of flat-track racing is evident the moment you meet him.
“The competition in the Pro Twins class is incredibly tough,” said Avila. “With five races down, we’ve had five different winners. There are a whole bunch of riders who can take the checkered each time out. You really have to be on top of the game every second you are on the track, and that’s what I am planning to do on Saturday.”
In addition to SDI Insulation, Avila is sponsored by Serramonte Ford, Circle Bell Racing, Boughner Racing, Mack Daddy Racing, Galvin Precession Machining, Arai, Kal-Gard, Alpinestars, Motion Pro, Westcoast Hotshoes, K&N Filters, Dickle Racing, Fox, Matrix Concepts, Works Connection, Hooper Motorsports, EBC Brakes, Allwood Construction and Moroso Construction.
