Last year Ryan Dungey and his team decided to contest the Monster Energy Cup at the last minute, and he finished second overall. This year he’s signed up a lot earlier…
Feld Motor Sports has announced that the 2010 Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, Supercross-class champion Ryan Dungey of Belle Plaine, Minnesota, will race the 2012 Monster Energy Cup at Las Vegas’ Sam Boyd Stadium on October 20.
At last year’s Monster Energy Cup, Dungey made his Red Bull KTM debut after spending five years with the Factory Suzuki team, where he captured every major AMA Championship. Dungey was a late entry to last year’s Monster Energy Cup lineup, making the announcement that he would compete just two days before the race. Dungey went 3-2-2 en route to finishing second overall last year.
“Coming into last year’s Monster Energy Cup, I was really excited about it,” said Dungey. “It was a quick decision we made – kind of last minute – but it was something different. The format was a little different and you had a million dollars up for grabs. The first year of the competition was a success.”
In 2010, Dungey became the first rider to win the coveted Supercross class and 450cc Motocross-class Championship as a rookie. In the 2011 Monster Energy Supercross Championship, Dungey earned one win and 12 podium finishes and finished third overall. In 2012, despite a shoulder injury, he earned four wins and finished third in the season standings. He has a career 11 Supercross-class wins.
The 2012 Monster Energy Cup features an all-new track design inspired by five-time Supercross-class champion Ricky Carmichael. The track design will consist of supercross and motocross obstacles unlike any other racetrack design in the world. More than 200 feet of the track will be built into the grandstands, and the riders will exit the stadium and race through the Monster Energy Fan Zone outside of the stadium and through the pit area before they catapult back into the stadium. The Monster Energy Cup posts a $250,000 purse, with the winner walking away with a $100,000 check, and any rider who wins all three main events will take home $1 million.
