In its ongoing effort to expand the sport of Vintage motorcycle-racing opportunities in Southern California, CALVMX and AHRMA played host to the first of three rounds of Classic English Observed Trials at Cahuilla Creek. With sponsorship from Speed & Sport and under the direction of Earl Burrows, eight challenging sections were laid out in and around the surrounding hillsides of the Cahuilla Creek facility.

Unlike its modern brethren, Vintage Trials utilizes the traditional continuous-motion-in-a-section rule. Whereas the modern competitors are allowed to stop, hop, pivot, etc., in vintage form, the riders must maintain forward motion at all times. The sections in a classic trials event are laid out to reflect this rule.

A cross-section of classic twin-shock trials machines took part in the event. Riders on such famous brands as Bultaco, Montesa, Greeves and Fantic took to the course. Probably the most unique machine entered was a custom-made CZ fabricated by veteran Vintage racing stalwart Charlie Richardson of C.R. High Performance. With a highly modified motor geared and tuned for the slow speeds of trials, coupled with a specially modified frame, Richardson put on an impressive showing to garner second overall in the Sportsman Intermediate division.

Greeves aficionado Gary Collman showcased a beautiful example of the British brand with a win in the Premier Intermediate division. Through eight sections, Collman garnered a mere five points in penalties.

In the Vintage Beginner division, Randi Schaller, on a TY Yamaha, showed good form as she navigated the beginner line sections. After three loops, the mother of two emerged the winner with a score of 10 points.

Scheduling is still pending for the next two rounds of the series. One of the goals the organizers have is to encourage modern trials participants to pull out their older machines and give the vintage version of their sport a try!
