When Cobra-mounted Slade Varola pays a visit to the A.V. Motoplex Ride Park, it’s a pretty good bet that he’ll be running toward the front of the pack in any minicycle races that he enters. Round two of the M2X Racing Smokin’ Summer Series was no exception, as Varola topped both of the 50cc Open and 50cc (7-8) A classes and split moto wins with Luke Jacobs for runner-up honors in the 65cc (0-8) class.

Slade Varola (45) won the 50cc Open and 50cc (7-8) A classes and was runner-up in the 65cc (0-8) class at round two of the M2X Racing Smokin’ Summer Series.

Ricky Negrete shot out of the gate in 50cc Open first-moto racing, but it was Varola controlling the pace out front by completion of lap one on the jump-filled layout. Negrete would go the distance for the second-place finish, ahead of Jack Carrigg, Nathan Abbott and Kayla Calnan.

Varola won the drag race to the first turn in moto two, over Carrigg and Abbott, and he would lead the charge for a little over a lap before a bobble dropped him back to fourth place. Carrigg inherited a comfortable lead over Negrete and appeared to have the win in the bag. However, Varola had other plans, and he put in an amazing last-lap charge that saw him get back around both Negrete and Carrigg for the well-deserved 1-1 sweep of the field. Negrete slipped past Carrigg just before they crossed underneath the checkers for a 2-2 showing. Abbott went 4-4, behind Carrigg, with Calnan (5-5) rounding out the top five finishers.

Mike Jackman 116 went 5-2 for second overall in the Lites Novice class at A.V. Motoplex Ride Park.

Varola, Negrete, Carrigg and Calnan all returned to do battle in the 50cc (7-8) A class. Negrete led the opening moto before Varola pushed him back to second place on the white-flag lap.

It was all Varola in moto two, as he went wire to wire for the win. Negrete was again second, followed by Carrigg (3-3) and Calnan (4-4).

Jacobs absconded with the holeshot in the first 65cc (0-8) contest and was being hounded by Varola until Varola went down. Jacobs cruised home for the win, with Justin Maliska climbing up into a second-place finish. Varola motored his KTM back up into a third-place showing, followed by Aiden Ferguson, Conner Styers and Matthew Hammer.

Varola was quickest out of the gate in moto two, with Jacobs keeping him in his sights for most of the race and then pouring on the pressure on the final circuit for a close second-place finish. Jacobs’ 1-2 punch earned the first-place trophy, over the 3-1 tally of Varola. Maliska went 2-4 for third, topping the 4-3 score of Ferguson and the 5-5 finishes of Styers.

Nolan Colborn (43) was runner-up in the 85cc Open field and also topped the 85cc (12-13) class.

Johnny Posca nabbed the holeshot in the opening Moto X Novice moto, only to go down on lap one and fall to the back of the pack. Derrick Hernandez inherited the top spot, and he would continue on uncontested for the win. Joel Brewer and Adam Moore went at it over second place, with Brewer coming out on top in the end. Justin Dunn fought his way up into a fourth-place finish, followed by Posca, Branson Pearce and Jimmy Hargraves.

Johnny Posca (138) gets the jump on Chad Norris (69), Spencer Burns (782), Adam Moore (121), Triston Stephenson (521) and eventual overall Novice class winner Derrick Hernandez (214) in the first Moto X combined Intermediate/ Novice-class moto.

Hernandez put his YZ450F into the point position at the drop of the gate in moto two, with Posca and Moore within striking distance on lap one. Hernandez put in one flawless lap after another en route to his second moto romp of the field. Posca stayed on two wheels for the entire moto and was rewarded with a second-place finish and third in the final standings, behind the consistent rides of Moore. A 6-4 showing earned Pearce fourth, over the 7-5 effort of Hargraves.

Triston Stephenson (521) topped both the Lites Intermediate and Big Bike Open classes.

Jack Miller survived a scary loop-out over the track’s largest jump the previous week to return this week on his rebuilt YZ450F to go 3-1 for the Super Senior Master-class victory. Miller came out on top of a three-way points tie with Garry Conner (2-2) and Bob Burns (1-3) to get the job done.

Kawasaki-mounted Nick Giorgio was perfect in the Super Senior Amateur ranks. Giorgio turned a pair of good starts into a commanding 1-1 sweep of the class. Art Dart was right there with Giorgio off the starts, but he would have to settle for a pair of runner-up finishes, over Gary Doll (4-3) and Lonnie Paschal (3-4).

Carlos Monee went down in the second turn of the first 85cc Beginner race as Kyle McCrea escaped with the early lead. McCrea went on to see the checkers first, some 30 seconds ahead of Monee, who put in an incredible ride to make it all the way back up into second place, ahead of Kyle Paschal, Scott Dodge and Scott Slattery.

Michael Carger (22) rounded out the top five in the 65cc (9-11) class.
