Hurd Motorsports, promoters of the world-class Broome-Tioga Sports Center, hosted the third round of the Winter Mud and Snow Scrambles Series. The series consists of nine rounds running from November through April, utilizing the multiple motocross tracks, grass-track and single-track trails of this massive facility. The series continues to grow and has been attracting new racers to this unique and challenging series but also continues to attract some of the most experienced and talented off-road riders from Upstate New York and beyond.
Mother Nature decided to make the third round a true winter-series round. Eight inches of new snow fell on Friday and blanketed the racecourse. The Broome-Tioga track crew scrambled to cut in a new course only hours before dawn on race day. The original course was cut down in length due to the snowfall, and the fact that it all came the day before the race. The racecourse’s direction of travel was reversed for the third round, giving racers yet another challenge.
Weather for the third round was frigid, and the wind-chill factor had temperatures hovering barely above single digits. The day began under mostly sunny skies, but those disappeared later in the day. The racecourse remained frozen throughout the day, and that helped racers in the traction department, but the frigid wind made any exposed skin a potential target for possible frostbite.
When the green flag dropped for the start of the Super Open motorcycle scrambles, Alex Dzikiewicz, Chris Luszczek, Zach Cleland, Andrew Tremblay and Charles Tremblay led the pack out of the first turn.
When the leaders had completed the opening lap, Dzikiewicz continued to lead but was being closely pursued by Nick Davis in second. Luszczek, Charles Tremblay and Andrew Tremblay rounded out the top five.
Davis caught and passed Dzikiewicz on lap two and took the lead; Dzikiewicz was relegated to second. Third through fifth were unchanged.
Davis continued to lead for the rest of the race and took the checkers for the win. Dzikiewicz, Luszczek, Tremblay and Cleland completed the top five.
When the green flag dropped for the start of the Quad Novice division scrambles, Allen Rhodes, Cyrus Homer, Devon Feehan, Mike Orcutt and Jordan Allen led the pack out of the first turn.
Rhodes continued to hold the point position when the leaders entered the scoring area. Boedy Lamoreaux, Sarah Parkhurst, Homer and Feehan rounded out the top five.
Those top five remained unchanged on lap three. Lamoreaux passed Rhodes on the following lap and took the lead; Rhodes was displaced to second. Homer moved up to third, which dropped Parkhurst to fourth. Feehan remained fifth.
Lamoreaux continued to lead on lap five and held on to take the win. Rhodes, Homer, Parkhurst and Feehan closed out the top five.
