Hurd Motorsports, promoters of the world-class Broome-Tioga Sports Center facility, hosted the sixth round of the Winter Mud and Snow Scrambles Series. There are three rounds remaining in this unique and challenging series, which is continuing to grow and has been attracting new racers as well as some of the most experienced and talented off-road riders from Upstate New York and beyond.
Race day dawned under overcast skies and slightly warmer temperatures than at previous rounds. A small snowstorm that produced a couple of inches of new snow hit the area in the morning and tapered off in the afternoon. The racecourse was frozen and slick in many spots, and it began to break down in some places later in the race program, but overall, riders said they liked the latest changes to track.
The sixth round of the Winter Series was sponsored by the Rider Down Foundation. The Rider Down Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping responsible off-road motorcyclists and ATV racers who have been injured while riding. Proceeds are used to provide assistance to the riders and their families when faced with medical expenses and related issues.
Hurd Motorsports, promoters of Broome-Tioga, hosted raffles, give-aways and Chinese auctions, and accepted donations throughout the day to raise funds for the Rider Down Foundation. Almost $1,000 was raised for this excellent organization that helps our fellow riders when they need it most. If you would like to make a tax-deductible donation, please visit the RDF website at www.riderdown.org.
When the green flag dropped for the start of the Over 40 Novice/Amateur bike scrambles, Steve Delelys, Mike Murphy and Jonathan Tice led the division out of the first turn and onto the racecourse. Mark Kuehn and Daniel Boehme rounded out the top five.
By the end of the opening lap, Boehme had worked his way through the pack to take the lead after a fifth-place start; Delelys was relegated to second. Tice, Murphy and Kuehn rounded out the top five.
When the leaders began lap three, Boehme continued to hold the point position, and the top-five running order was unchanged. The top five were all spread out after 3 ½ laps and the order still remained unchanged at the checkered flag. Boehme took the win, followed by Delelys, Tice, Murphy and Kuehn.
When the green flag dropped for the start of the Novice bike scrambles, Cody Tice, Samantha Bird, Brandon McWherter and Jon Bidlack led the pack out of the first turn.
When the leaders entered the scoring area at the beginning of the second leap, Bidlack had worked his way through the pack and held the lead after a fourth-place start. Tice was second, Ethan Livingston had moved up to third, Brandon Karp held fourth, and John Ashlaw was fifth.
Bidlack continued to lead the Novice division at the start of lap three, with Tice a fairly close second. Karp passed Livingston to take third. Ashlaw was now fourth, and Adam Gordon rounded out the top five.
By the start of the fourth lap, the lead riders had all spread out, and the order remained unchanged for the next two laps. Bidlack took the win. Tice, Karp, Ashlaw and Gordon completed the top five.
