The flat-track season kicked off in Florida with the first two rounds at Daytona International Speedway. The last time I was at Bike Week in Florida was way back in 1989, when the flat trackers raced at Municipal Stadium, which could seat 9,600. The Stadium hosted the AMA Flat Track Motorcycle Championships during Daytona Beach Bike Week. The track was really good for racing and great for the spectators, too. They would race there until 2009, when the city took the track down as part of changes to the stadium. Those races moved to a new dirt track at Daytona International Speedway, right outside turns one and two.

Thursday night’s races were exciting, but the track was bit rough, with a few nasty ruts creating a one- or two-groove track.

Friday night’s racing was much better, with riders testing the high groove and making passes on the outside, but there were still a lot of restarts due to numerous crashes.

There is a lot going on during Bike Week, but if you like close, exciting racing, be sure to take a night off of the downtown festivities and give flat track a try. I think you’ll enjoy it and still have time to make it downtown after the races to look at all the bikes on Main Street.
