Hurd Motorsports, promoters of the world-class Broome-Tioga Sports Center facility, hosted the penultimate round of the Winter Mud and Snow Scrambles Series. The racing has been excellent at all rounds, and although the series is now beginning to wind down, with only one round remaining. it continues to attract new racers as well as some of the most experienced and talented off-road riders from Upstate New York and beyond.
This race day dawned under mostly overcast skies, though the sun did make an appearance or two off and on throughout the day. The forecast for race day predicted a high of 45 degrees, but a very brisk wind made it feel more like 35 and maybe even chillier.
Track conditions were very wet and muddy and proved to be challenging for riders, as they continually reached for tear-off after tear-off, and some riders tossed their goggles altogether, trying to aid their visibility. When riders exited some of the woods sections of the racecourse, they were effectively unrecognizable, which in turn made scoring difficult.
When the green flag dropped for the start of the Over 50 bike scrambles, Tim Meyers, Glen Davis, Lew Warner, Rich Bristol and Tom Hurd led the pack out of the first turn and onto the racecourse. By the end of the opening lap, Hurd had climbed through the pack and taken the lead. He was followed by Meyers, Bristol, Davis and Warner.
When the leaders entered the scoring area to start the third lap, Hurd remained in the point position. Davis passed Bristol and Meyers to take the runner-up position. Bristol, Meyers and Warner rounded out the top five.
Hurd remained in the lead at the start of lap four, with Davis in tow. Meyers passed Bristol back to reclaim third while pushing Bristol back to fourth. Warner remained fifth.
The top five remained unchanged for the next two laps, and Hurd took the Over 50-division win. Davis, Meyers, Bristol and Warner completed the top five.
When the green flag dropped for the start of the Over 30 Novice/Amateur bike scrambles, Tim Jackson, Mike Murphy, Rich Bristol, Joshua Teeter, Kyle Gregrow and Eric Barrett led the pack of 11 riders out of the first turn and onto the racecourse.
When the leaders entered the scoring area at the beginning of the second lap, Jackson remained in the lead, and that’s where he would stay for the remainder of the race. Craig Harold, Bristol, Murphy and Gregrow rounded out the top five.
Jackson continued to lead at the start of lap three. Dan Cleveland was now in second, and Harold had dropped back to third. Bristol and Murphy rounded out the top five.
By the start of the fourth lap, Jackson had opened up a significant lead. Harold moved up to second, and Murphy was third. Bristol remained in fourth, and Gregrow was fifth.
The top five remained unchanged for the following two laps and Jackson took the convincing win. Harold, Murphy, Bristol and Gregrow completed the top five.
