The Mason Dixon Flat Trackers hosted their first short track of the season as a day-and-night doubleheader at the multipurpose arena at the Lampeter Fireman’s Fairgrounds facility. As usually happens when you run an afternoon race on a dirt track, dust was a problem: too much water and it is too slick; not enough water and it is a little dusty, with minute dirt particles in the turns that were ready to claim any unsuspecting rider with a quick slide-out.

Among those unsuspecting riders was Cameron Smith.

In the 450cc Sportsman B final, Smith and Joey Alexander jumped in front of the rest of the pack and pulled away. Tyler Mullen got by Frank Valentin going into turn three on the fourth lap to take the third spot. During the late laps, Chris Thomas pressured Valentin for fourth, using an outside-line pass off the final turn to take fourth.

In the 250cc Sportsman contest, Smith was running second, behind Colton Smith and in front of Brandon Price and Dalton Gauthier, but in the close racing, Smith ended up on the ground in turn three. Colton and Price stayed glued to each other until Price slipped under Colton as they entered turn one on the seventh lap.

The Open B class had basically the same cast of characters as the 450cc Sportsman B field, except this time Smith again fell in turn three on the opening lap. This left Alexander and Anthony Crabbe to battle for the lead, with Brian Nuse, Tyler Mullen and Austin Wherley battling for third. Alexander held off Crabbe’s pressure tactics over the eight laps for the win.

Joey Alexander (83S) and Anthony Crabbe (38) finished first and second, respectively, in the Open B class.

The Open A contest was a case of “déjà vu all over again,’ as the dominant rider in this area on the small, multi-use facilities, Don Mullen, was in front, with Ryan Wells, Colton Smith and Chad Cose following. On the third lap, Colton Smith and Cose got by Wells in their closely fought battle for position, but after that the order stayed the same to the end.

Don Mullen (71) won the Open A final. Chad Cose (49) was third, and Ryan Wells (94B) finished fourth.

The 450cc Sportsman A final saw Tyler Phillips surprising many by taking the lead, ahead of Cose, Colton Smith, Jamison Minor and Ryan Connelly. Phillips started to put some distance on the others while the order stayed the same for more than three laps – until the red flag came out for a downed rider.

Phillips held the lead off the single-file restart, with Colton Smith, Cose, Wells and Cory Strickler behind. Phillips held off Smith’s challenges until the final turn, when Colton slipped under Phillips to just take the win.

After several red flags and restarts, the Over 40 final finally got under way, with Pro hillclimber Phil Libhart leading Dave Smith, Ray Jenkins and Scott Mullen. Once they ran a few laps, things settled down, and the order remained the same to the end.

In the Over 50 class, Lowell Wherley used a holeshot to put some distance on the battle for runner-up among Darren Phillips, Ray Jenkins and Bill Young. Jenkins slipped under Phillips for second as they came off turn four on the third lap.

Lowell Wherley (28), Ray Jenkins (25) and Darren Phillips (4) went one-two-three in the Over 50 final.

Kyle McGrane and Anthony Crabbe put several bikelengths on Nathan Reichert, Tyler Rylee and Caleb Scheide in their battle for the 250cc B win. On the final lap, Crabbe took the lead off turn four as they navigated around a downed rider and the flagman helping him; however, they reverted to the previous lap, since the red flag was being displayed, though after the front duo had passed the line.

Melanie Siegel almost took the 125cc Two-Stroke/ 150 Four-Stroke win, as she and Chase Smith pulled away from Bronson Jackson, John Schwatka and Nathan Reichert. About halfway, Jackson caught a developing rut in turn four and dropped back two spots before regaining momentum. Over the last half of the race, Chase rode the outside line and gradually got beside Siegel, taking command as they started the final lap.

Chase Smith (14) was the winner and Melanie Siegel (38) was the runner-up in the 125cc Two-Stroke/150cc Four-Stroke contest.
