Hurd Motorsports, promoters of the Broome-Tioga Sports Center, hosted their second motocross race of the season on Saturday, April 19, under mostly sunny skies and with temperatures that started out around the 40-degree mark and eventually climbed up to 50 degrees. A brisk wind made the morning portion of the race program downright cold.

Jeremy Edwards (4) and Colby Davis (136) lead the start of the first Junior Mini 85cc (9-11) moto, while Hanna Heinecke (66) leads the start of the Girls’ division portion of the race.

Hurd Motorsports combined this motocross race with the final round of the Broome-Tioga Winter Mud and Snow Scrambles Series. At specific times, the Winter Series participants used the start area for their flagged start and proceeded to use about three-quarters of the motocross track and were then routed onto the back woods and grass-track sections of the sprawling Broome-Tioga facility. Rider turnout for both races was good, but spectator turnout was spectacular!

Track conditions were good, but the track surface was fairly dry, due to the lack of rain leading up to race day. The water hoses came out early in the race program and were used throughout the day to keep the dust at bay.

When the card turned sideways for the gate drop and start of the first Junior Mini 85cc (9-11) moto, Jeremy Edwards, Colby Davis and Julian Rich led the pack out of the first turn and onto the racecourse. Edwards continued to lead the pack upon exiting the technical front rhythm section and was followed by Davis, Cayden Pope, Jeremy Conklin and Rich.

Edwards began to pull away from the pack, and he had built a six-second lead by the start of the second lap. The top three remained unchanged. Rich caught and passed Conklin to take fourth; Conklin was relegated to fifth. Edwards continued to extend his lead and after 2 ½ laps his advantage was clocked at 10 seconds and counting. The top five remained unchanged from the previous lap.

The battle for fourth between Julian Rich (55) and Jeremy Conklin (126) lasted the entire first moto.
