The Nor Cal Championship crew organized another excellent event at the Prairie City Dirt Track, following a full day of practice on August 22. Track configuration on Saturday included both the TT and oval short track, with a smooth surface, well prepared and racey.

Racing was very competitive, in weather that was a little toasty but with a nice breeze. Twenty-some heat races culminated in 16 main events that included 138 entries.

Eleven riders took their places on the grid for the first main event, Formula 140. Professional road racer Brian Bartlow got the point position off the line, but it only took Brad Miller three laps to get around him for the lead. Miller took the pack to the checkers, followed by Barlow and Karl Scheel.

Four up-and-coming racers in the Pee Wee class lined up for their main event. After winning the heat race, Bobby Stellfox III won the main event, too. Getting the lead off the line, Stellfox never looked back, leading Chase Bellotti, Jeffrey Wells, Callie Chesebro and Rylee Randel to the finish.

Kevin Keeran got the Over 40 Senior-class holeshot. Keeran battled with Bartlow through lap four, when Bartlow took the lead. Another road racer and supermoto rider, Jason Lauritzen, held the third position, behind Keeran, through all 10 laps.

The Shumate brothers, Dylan and Dustin, not only celebrated their 12th birthday on the track but had a birthday dinner at Hooters following the day’s racing. Happy birthday, boys, and congratulations, Dustin, on your win this day, in the combined 65cc/125cc class. Braden Weller and Devon Konnoff followed Dustin to the podium by finishing second and third, respectively.

After finishing the heat race in the second spot, Mark Topping won the Vintage Light class. Logan Grsini and Logan Rich joined him on the podium.

Nine riders took their places on the grid for the 150cc Production class. Frank Young got the holeshot, and Brad Miller joined him in front. Chris Gray wound his way through the three riders in front of him into the third position during the eighth lap and then remained there to the finish.

One of the largest classes of the day was the Vintage Open class. Thirteen riders were competing for the top spot – 11 Yamaha riders and two Honda jockeys. Jim Cole, aboard a Honda, rode all 10 laps in front of the pack, with Mitch Gallagher looking for an opening to overtake him. That opening never occurred, so Gallagher finished second, piloting his Yamaha. Jimmy Clarke, also aboard a Honda, finished third.

Cole took the Over 50 class home, too, but he had to work a little harder for this win. He finished the first lap five places back from the front. Rich Dermody held his second-place position from start to finish. Dana Fletcher, Brian Pecore and Mike Pitschner followed them in.

Robert Shumate, Nolan Hunter and Frank Chesebro rode the Open C/ Novice combined class one, two, three, respectively, in both the heat and the main.

Bartlow was back on the track for another win, this one coming in the 250cc class. Lauritzen and Travis Schwank were chasing him.

Maybe the best race of the day, the fast girls’ class included little girls and big girls alike. Renee Henault, Rylee Gallagher and another Shumate, Jody, finished in that order, followed by Dana Weller and Rylee Randel.

Brander Weller led the Shumate brothers, Dustin and Dylan, to the finish in the combined 85cc/ 150cc class.

Money will be paid to the top 10 in points at the end of the series. Following this day’s race, Frank Young was first in the points. Kevin Keeran lags behind Young by eight points, and Nor Cal promoter Michael Mannion sits nicely in third, with 126 points, 12 behind the leader. On this day, McAllister finished first, followed by Brian Bartlow. Young was third.

Michael Mannion, his wife and his crew put their hearts and souls into this series, and they do a great job!
