It was nothing short of a celebration at Glen Helen Raceway, as decades of racers traveled from not only throughout the USA but internationally as well for this special “40 Years of Women’s Motocross” event.

There were classes for everyone from Women First-Time Beginners to the Women’s Open Pro class, in which local racer Sayaka Kaneshiro challenged German champion Steffi Laier for the win.

A Parade of Champions from 1974 to the present kicked things off under a hot sun. Then there was a meet-and-greet session with AMA Hall of Fame inductee Sue Fish. The Legends and Heroes Tour displayed the competitors’ motocross bikes and memorabilia. Everyone present was welcome to have a poster signed by the champions, who were present before the end of the day. A round of applause for those who put this all together, including Tami Greenhill, Miki Keller, and the CALVMX.

This day was also the first of an AHRMA doubleheader, the AHRMA Race Tech Post-Vintage National.

Here are some photographic highlights of the event…

This was more than a race – it was a celebration!

Who’s this on the pit bike? Why, that’s Todd Peterson of Team Swolen, and Lori Payne, holding a bunch of Swolen shirts. You’ve got the right look with a Swolen shirt. (This photographer wore his!)

Now it was time for the national anthem, and the riders gathered to listen to Sandi Weidler sing it so very well.

Lori Kneebone and Phillip Hall give us a big smile. “This is the most people she’s ever competed against,” Phillip said about Lori, who was getting ready to race. Regarding himself, Phillip said, “You don’t know how much I wish I could throw my leg across the saddle.” Take your time and fully heal your heart, Phillip.

Gale Webb (left) was excited about this event, and so was Mary McGee (right). A racer from the ’60s, Mary knows far more about the origin of motocross than most people. Mary remembers when actor and racer Steve McQueen told her, “Mary, you should get off that pansy road-racing bike and come out to the desert.” She replied, “What – and get dirty?!” She did just that and rode a Husky in the Baja 500.

Andy Metz (18) leads Dion Davis (75) in the GP 1 250cc Novice event. Metz gave us his take of the event: “The day was awesome! I took second overall for my class. Just the thrill of racing at Glen Helen was what made the 1,400-mile drive from Seattle all worth it! I hadn’t ridden a two-stroke, much less raced motocross in 30 years.”

Greg Greenwood (83) takes this second-moto start with the tires slightly out of line. Once he got the needed traction, he went on to take the moto win. His bike is the project 1985 YZ250N that we’ve heard so much about. Greg said about the bike: “It’s not a complete restoration, just a rebuild and tune-up of some major components. She’s a workhorse, not a garage queen.” Proving the project to be worthy, Greg took a 2-1 finish to capture the GP 2 250cc Novice victory.
