POMONA, CA, OCT. 27
I found it most interesting when Ed Kretz Sr. spoke to me of his World War II army service at Pomona, where he trained dispatch riders all through the war. A resident of Pomona when he was inducted, Kretz must have been one of the very few among our military who “lived at home” during his service years!
Eddie kept his Scout Flat Tracker at the Fairgrounds and said that his commanding officer would frequently ask him to put on an exhibition for visiting brass. Moreover, Eddie rode the track constantly as part of the training of army riders and for his personal enjoyment.
I don’t know if the records support it, but he said his hundreds of laps during his army assignment at Pomona gave him a great advantage when racing returned to that track after the war.
