For the last time in 2014, the sound of air-cooled two-strokes and the smell of pre-mix filled the air at Glen Helen Raceway for the final appearance of Vintage Motocross at the legendary venue this year. The unexpected arrival of a much-needed rainstorm did little to dampen the enthusiasm of the participants, and swift changes to the course minimized the damage wrought by the downpour.

The theme for this event was a salute to the local legends of Southern California. Riders such as Davey Williams, Gary Denton, Billy Urban, Kenny Zahrt, Lars Larsson, Gunnar Lindstrom and Doug Dubach were honored for their achievements in the sport. A special salute to Chuck “Feets” Minert, whose career dates back to 1946, included his being enshrined in the Glen Helen Walk of Fame.

Ryan Carman (155E) dominated the Vintage Sportsman 250cc Intermediate class.

Ryan Carman (155E) dominated the Vintage Sportsman 250cc Intermediate class.

On the track, Ryan Carman once again decimated the Vintage Sportsman 250cc Intermediate class with a double-moto sweep. Carman executed another of his trademark holeshots in the first moto and rapidly stretched his lead to roughly 10 seconds over the rest of the pack. Behind Carman, Suzuki rider Brent Wilkinson and Yamaha jockey John Woolsey trailed, with Maico-mounted Norm Himaka a close fourth.

On lap three, Carman continued to lead, with Wilkinson still second, while Honda rider Travis McCaw had worked his way through the pack and up into third. That order remained unchanged at the finish, with Carman, Wilkinson and McCaw taking the top three spots.

Brent Wilkinson (51M) ended up the runner-up overall in the Vintage Sportsman 250cc Intermediate class.

McCaw shook things up in moto two by snatching the lead as the pack rounded turn one after the start. Behind him were Himaka and Wilkinson. McCaw managed to hold the lead until midway through lap two, when Carman, overcoming a slow start, powered his way from midpack to first within a few corners.

Travis McCaw (511) finished third overall in the Vintage Sportsman 250cc Intermediate class.

Carman kept his distinctive white Elsinore with the anodized orange motor ahead of the rest of the pack for the remainder of the moto. Behind him, Wilkinson secured second, with Himaka in third. At the finish, Carman clinched another overall victory, with Wilkinson second and McCaw third overall.

Honda-mounted Dave Feeney topped both Over 50 GP Intermediate motos in impressive fashion, with multiple-time class winner Tim Hoole in the runner-up position on his Suzuki.

Moto one saw Feeney power his way into the lead as the pack climbed the uphill toward the back portion of the track, with Hoole and Honda rider Ron Rinden close behind. Feeney was the master of the Glen Helen course, never putting a wheel wrong on his way to the moto win, although Hoole kept him honest with repeated challenges from his runner-up spot. Rinden finished third.

Feeney again captured the lead as the pack powered out of the starting area in the second stanza. Hoole stayed latched to Feeney’s rear knobby, with Rinden running in third. The end of lap two saw Feeney and Hoole up front, while Mark Stubbs had worked his way into third.

By the white-flag lap, it was obvious that, barring a last-second flub, Feeney was on his way to a two-moto sweep and the overall victory. The theory proved valid, as Feeney clinched the overall, followed by Hoole, with Stubbs and his 4-3 moto finishes in third.

CALVMX’s 2014 season will conclude with a final visit to Cahuilla Creek MX Park on December 14. Originally scheduled for The Ranch, the venue was changed due to its sudden closing and uncertain future. In addition to a full schedule of Vintage and Post-Vintage racing, there will also be a fundraising race to help the “Fight for Ocotillo Wells” campaign. For a minimum $10 donation, the special race is open to riders with any type of machine.
