BINGHAMTON, NY, NOV. 8, 2014
Hurd Motorsports, promoters of the world-class Broome-Tioga Sports Center facility, hosted the opening round of the fourth season of their Winter Mud and Snow Scrambles Series. The series continues to grow and now consists of 10 rounds running from November through April and utilizing the multiple motocross tracks, grass-track and single-track trails of this massive facility. This unique and challenging series continues to expand and has been attracting new racer but also continues to draw some of the most experienced and talented off-road riders from Upstate New York and beyond.
Round two dawned under overcast skies and in chilly temperatures in the low 40s, with a brisk wind that made it feel much colder. Mother Nature attempted to help by throwing in some occasional sunshine throughout the day, but by late afternoon the clouds had begun to roll in as the daylight began to fade “early” now that Daylight Saving Time has expired. Track conditions were good, although rain and snow squalls the day prior to the event made the woods sections wet and slippery in many spots.
When the green flag dropped for the start of the Super Open motorcycle scrambles, Kevin Kilmer, Spencer Hoyt, Marcus Scott-Cornell, Mike Stryker and Ken Chamberlin led the pack onto the racecourse. Kilmer, Hoyt and Stryker were a close first through third and were battling for the lead and the win when the leaders completed the first lap. Scott-Cornell and Chamberlin continued to hold fourth and fifth, respectively.
In that battle for the lead, Kilmer continued to hold the lead for the next two laps, with Hoyt and Stryker remaining within striking distance. Scott-Cornell and Chamberlin continued to round out the top five.
The battle for the lead heated up on the white-flag lap, and the top three closed the gaps to one another. When the leaders entered the motocross track, and with only four turns to go to the checkered flag, Kilmer cross-rutted and stalled his KTM. Stryker was too close to avoid Kilmer and got stuck behind him, which allowed Hoyt to cruise around them both and take the lead and the win in dramatic fashion. Kilmer took second and Stryker was third. Scott-Cornell and Chamberlin completed the top five.
When the green flag dropped for the start of the Over 30 Amateur/ Novice scrambles, Kenny Monico, Tim Jackson, David Ackley and Dan Deemie led the pack out of the switchback first turn and onto the racecourse.
When the leaders had completed the first lap, Deemie had moved through the pack and had taken the lead; he was followed by Jackson, Ackley, Monico and Tim Grover.
Deemie continued to hold the point position at the start of the third lap. Ackley, who was now running second, had passed Jackson, relegating Jackson to third. Monico and Grover remained fourth and fifth, respectively.
When the leaders entered the motocross track section at the end of lap three, the top five remained unchanged from the previous lap.
Deemie continued to hold the lead on the white-flag lap, and he held on to take the win. Ackley, Jackson, Monico and Grover completed the top five.
