It all began 12 months ago at Glen Helen Raceway, and now, 12 rounds spread over three venues later, the 2014 California Vintage Motocross season is a wrap. Through rare bouts of rain and nontraditional (for Southern California) cold to the furnace-level heat of the summer months, the Vintage Racing season never faltered.

Brent Wilkinson (51M) dominated the Vintage Sportsman 250cc Intermediate class during the 2014 CALVMX So Cal Regional Series.

Cahuilla Creek MX Park was the stage for the final round of the 2014 season. Torrential rains the previous week had track crew members hustling to modify the popular “Vet” course around the miniature lakes that had formed in the low-lying areas of the track. Their work produced an amazingly Vintage-friendly course that had riders raving about its layout and primo traction. Even the tricky right-hand turn that butted up next to one of the large puddles was met with good humor. More than one racer found himself being forced to work his way out of the mudhole in a cloud of steam after overshooting the tight turn.

Prior to the start of the regular motos, a parade lap was staged in salute to the memory of Southern California MX legend Kenny Zahrt, who, sadly, had passed away recently. Known primarily as a Bultaco pilot, Zahrt was one of the original local “fast guys” who dominated the motocross scene in the early 1970s.

Additionally, a special two-moto race was staged, with entry-fee proceeds going to help preserve the hugely popular Ocotillo Wells open riding area, which has become the target of geothermal energy groups. Some 27 riders opened their wallets and took to the track for the fundraiser.

Suzuki rider Brent Wilkinson had one of the most dominant seasons in the Vintage Sportsman 250cc Intermediate class, with numerous podium placings and overall victories. At Cahuilla Creek, Wilkinson showed why he’s a strong candidate for promotion to the Expert ranks by notching a two-moto sweep.

In moto one, Wilkinson fought a three-rider duel with Honda rider Jim Barker and Maico man Norm Himaka. Midway through lap two, Himaka passed Wilkinson for the lead, and they proceeded to pass and repass each other, with Barker in third.

Near the end of the final lap, Himaka experienced front-brake problems and was forced to pull off the track. Wilkinson powered his way to the moto victory, with Barker finishing second and Husqvarna pilot Keith Sievers third. Himaka managed to get his Maico rolling again in time to salvage fourth in the moto.

Jim Barker (59) finished up as runner-up in the Vintage Sportsman 250cc Intermediate class.

His brake problem solved, Himaka led the pack onto the main course at the start of the second moto. Powering their way onto the back half of the course, Wilkinson blitzed his way into the lead. He quickly put several bikelengths between himself and Himaka, who was followed by Barker.

Despite brake gremlins, Norm Himaka (311) placed third in the Vintage Sportsman 250cc Intermediate class.

Himaka stayed within striking range, but it was obvious that Wilkinson was not going to be bested on this day. At the checkers, Wilkinson rolled across the line with the moto win and the overall victory, followed by Barker with his 2-4 scores. Himaka bagged third with 4-2 tally.

Moving back in time, the Classic 500cc Intermediate contest’s top three finishers were all mounted on truly classic British BSA “thumpers.” Andrew McKeag, Tim McIntyre and John Grebinstein put the big single-cylinder machines through their paces in impressive style.

For the final time in 2014, the crowd-favorite three-wheelers took to the course (they do a great job of smoothing over braking bumps) and it was Paul Proctor taking Stock 250cc Expert gold, while Jerry Nocciolo topped the 250cc Stock class and Larry Proctor took the overall in the Open Expert class.
