For Nick Henderson at the final round of the Baltimore County Trail Riders/ Cockeysville Optimist Club’s 38th annual Rodney Farris Memorial Short Track, it was a case of “you win some, you lose some.” At the previous week’s event, he’d won four classes; on this night, he “only” won two – the 250cc and 450cc finals – losing two on his 150cc mount, due to a typical Timonium first-turn shunt in the 125cc Two-Stroke/150cc Four-Stroke semi and a last-lap pass by Cory Texter in the Adult 150cc contest.

Nick Henderson (29), Derek Hersh (22A) and Joe Schuler (79) finished one, two, three in the 250cc final at the 38th annual Rodney Farris Memorial Short Track.

The 250cc final saw Henderson and Colin Cunningham jumping several bikelengths in front of Derek Hersh, Joe Schuler and Samantha Bergman. Cunningham fell in turn two on the sixth lap while trying to nudge his way into the lead.

Henderson grabbed the 450cc lead ahead of motocrosser Scotty Clark, Tom McGrane, Joey Alexander and Phil Libhart. McGrane moved into second on the fourth lap, with Alexander coming along. Clark fell a lap later, while Alexander stayed very close to McGrane all the way to the end, looking for a nudging opportunity.

Similar to the previous week’s race, Henderson took the initial Adult 150cc lead, ahead of Cory Texter, Ryan Varnes, Jamison Minor and Donnie Mullen. This time, Texter didn’t have to fight for second in the early stages, as he was on Henderson’s tail right from the start. At the halfway mark, Mullen got into third, but he couldn’t get close enough to do any damage. Texter slipped under Henderson going into turn one on the final lap; Henderson tried to get under Texter off the final turn but was unsuccessful.

Cory Texter (44) made a last-lap pass on Nick Henderson (29) to win the Adult 150cc final.

Despite his best efforts to throw it away, McGrane’s son Logan topped both the 65cc and 85cc finals. After having gotten tangled up in a crash in the heat race, he wheelied off the line at the start of the main, but he was in front of Cameron Schlough and Colin Murphy by the third turn, and he pulled away.

The 85cc contest saw Logan McGrane in front of Kyle Fitzmaurice, Jared Florian and Mason Farro. Fitzmaurice stayed close to McGrane the entire distance.

For the umpteenth time in the history of this even, Rob Smith put his “red-headed stepchild” Bultaco at the front of the Vintage final, but this time he had to work for it. Mark Burkholder, on another Bul, took the lead, ahead of Dave Smith and Rob Smith. Rob was easily into second by the third turn. Then, on the third lap, he did a set of “knock, knock” in both turns, then came through off turn two on the fourth lap and started to pull away.

Mark Burkholder (62) ended up as runner-up in the Vintage class, behind victor Rob Smith (69).

In a class for another group of old-timers on newer machines, the Over 40 class, Rich Mellinger led Phil Libhart, Jim Blair, Chris Hathaway and Taylor White out of turn two. After staying close for the first half of the race, Libhart slipped under Mellinger off turn two when the latter slipped slightly. White moved into third by the seventh lap.

Phil Libhart (28) won the Over 40 final, over Rich Mellinger (86).

While not necessarily an “old’’ class, the oldest rider in the class, Lisa Niner, took a popular win in the Women’s class. She took the lead, ahead of Nicole Henderson, Elizabeth Fitch and Melanie Siegel. Fitch fell on the fifth lap, while Henderson stayed right behind Niner the entire distance.

Lisa Niner (9R – which stands for “Niner”… or, in this case, perhaps “Ninth Reindeer…? Look at those antlers!) won the Women’s contest, over Nicole Henderson (29).

Joe Schuler led the 125cc Two-Stroke/150cc Four-Stroke final, over Jason Cole, John Henderson and Matt Langrehr. Cole took the lead on the third lap, while Henderson and Langrehr battled for third. Cole took the win, Schuler was runner-up, John Henderson placed third and Langrehr finished fourth.

In the 125cc Two-Stroke/150cc Four-Stroke class, Jason Cole (47C) scored the victory, over Joe Schuler (79).
