Race Report by Ben Meza, Pro 2
Racing the AMA District 37 Big 6 GP has always been something on my list of races to do. In 2015, I made the decision to chase the whole series. I would be contending the Pro 2 class.

The first round for the series would be the famous Adelanto Grand Prix. I was a little nervous going into the race. I haven’t raced since I lacerated my liver. I have a brand-new bike and the same great team. With no previous result in the series, I was going into round one very open-minded.

The Friday before race day, I raced the Unclassified race to check out the track. The track was pretty basic: really fast, with quite a few turns, no big jumps – a simple EnduroCross track, and the mud jump was rather easy. I wasn’t worried for race day at all.

As I lined up for my race, the only thing I could think of was getting a good start. Luckily, that is exactly what I did. I got a second-place start. [The rider in] first place made a mistake and I quickly hopped in the lead.

I was running up front for a while when I started feeling pain in my abdomen. Immediately, I thought about my liver. I knew at that moment that it wasn’t completely healed. I put my head down and just started trying to choose smooth lines. It seemed like slow-motion as the laps slowly ticked away. One by one they went until finally the white flag came out.

I had gone from leading the Pro 2 class to barely holding on to a top-10. Although in pain, I feel I maintained a good and safe speed. I reached the finish line, getting valuable points towards the championship and learning a lot about my body and bike.

I am now turning my focus towards round one of the AMA National Hare and Hound Championship Series, where I will be racing Pro 250. I can’t thank my team enough for the support this weekend, as well as my family, my girlfriend, and her family. Racing Pro in two series this year is going to be a new experience, but I know I can accomplish my goals with the help of all the people behind me. I have the best sponsors in the business helping me, and I couldn’t be more grateful!
