A pristine track, great rider turnout, and perfect weather made for an awesome day of racing for the Over The Hill Gang motocross club at the recently reopened Los Angeles County Raceway track. Vincent Gonzales Jr. found the conditions to his liking, as he flew his KX450F to 3-1 moto finishes to top the Over 58 Novice class.

Steve Mizrahi started things off in his favor early in the first moto by grabbing the lead, ahead of Chris Goodman, Ben Paris, Gonzales, and the rest of the field. By lap two, Gonzales was knocking on the back door of Paris, and a lap later he moved up into third place.

Gonzales continued his march toward the front, closing to the back fender of Goodman. A bobble on the part of Gonzales gave Goodman a little breathing room as the laps wound down.

Mizrahi continued on for the first-moto victory, pretty much uncontested. Goodman took second, a few seconds ahead of Gonzales. Paris held on for fourth, ahead of Gary Doll, Carl Powell and Reid Franke.

Mark Flinders (107) claimed third overall in the Over 38 Expert class.

Mizrahi was off to another great start as moto two got under way, but he soon had his hands full with Gonzales, who trailed Mizrahi for a little over a lap before dropping Mizrahi back a spot. Goodman came from out of the pack to hound Mizrahi, who was now in second place, for much of the race before finally making a pass stick on the white-flag lap.

Gonzales would go the distance out front for the win, and with that victory he come out on top of a three-way points tie to claim the overall honors on his 3-1 effort. Goodman’s 2-2 tally topped the 1-3 score of Mizrahi for second in the final standings. Paris (4-4) rounded out the top four, over Doll (5-5), Franke (7-6) and Powell (6-9).

Doug Goodman was quickest out of the gate in the first Over 52 Expert moto to lead Shy Moshe, David Blunk and Rick Johnson. Blunk quickly made his way up into second place, and soon he and Goodman were distancing themselves from the rest of the field.

Moshe dropped off the pace, allowing Tracy Hrach to slip up into third place. Just a couple of seconds back, Arnie Davis and Johnson were arguing over the fourth spot.

Blunk ended up using a last-lap pass on Goodman to get to the checkers first for the hard-fought win. Third went to Hrach, who was followed by Davis, Johnson and Steve Plattoni.

David Blunk (280) was runner-up in the Over 52 Expert class.

In moto two, Moshe led Davis, Goodman and Blunk in a nice battle over the top spot for a couple of laps before Goodman took over. In a repeat of the first moto, Goodman and Blunk went at it over the lead for much of the race, but this time Goodman kept Blunk at bay all the way to the checkers to sew up the overall on his 2-1 showing. Davis used 4-3 rides to edge out the 3-5 finishes of Hrach for third overall. Johnson rounded out the top five on a 5-4 tally.

Mosely made his way to the front of the field early in both motos and disappeared on his way to a couple of convincing wins. Rick Jameson flew his CR250 Honda to a pair of runner-up finishes. Mark Bowen rounded out the top three with a pair of third-place finishes, over Alan Hill (5-6) and James Davis (6-7).

Bob Woods jumped out to the early lead in the Over 45 Beginner class, with Richard Hurtado in tow. Robert Hillman picked off Hurtado and then slowly reeled in Woods and made a last-lap pass to earn the moto-one win.

Hurtado led the first couple of circuits of moto two before Woods made his way to the front. With a clear track ahead of him, Woods would motor away for the second-moto win and, with it, the overall honors on the day. Rick Samiento and Hurtado argued over second place for the second half of the moto, with Samiento (4-2) coming out on top for second overall, over the 3-3 tally of Hurtado.
