“COLD.”

There was no better way to describe the weather conditions found at the Cahuilla Creek MX Park facilities than that simple four-letter word. Rain and body-numbing winds battered racers and spectators alike throughout the weekend of the CALVMX Regional Series’ second round and the accompanying opening round of the AHRMA Vintage and Post-Vintage National Series.

Classic racing returned for the first time in 2015 to Cahuilla Creek MX Park in a big way, with two full days of racing on the popular “Vet” track. Suitably altered for the pre-1975-era machines and then again reconfigured overnight for their later-era cousins, the course received rave reviews from a large majority of riders on both days.

With the continuing goal of preserving the sights and sounds of machines from the first generation of American motocross, Saturday was strictly for the short-suspension travel bikes. Adding to the magic of the day was the presence of motocross pioneer and Hall of Fame member Gary “The Professor” Bailey, who was saluted for his contributions to the sport. At the pre-race riders’ meeting, Bailey was presented with the framed original $150 check he received for being the winner of the Firecracker MX at Saddleback Park back in 1969. Bailey commented that he’d thought the amount was okay – until he learned the visiting European racers had earned $400 each in appearance fees alone!

On the track, eight motos comprising multiple classes filled the Cahuilla track on Saturday, and a further nine on Sunday kept the frigid track in constant use. Scoring was complicated, as some riders were competing for CALVMX points while others were after AHRMA points, and some were pursuing both!

One of the most impressive showings was put on by one of the youngest entrants. Ben Eisen is a regular competitor in the Junior division, on a small-bore Honda. On this day, Eisen used a newly acquired 1973 Yamaha MX 250 to take the overall in the Junior Novice class.

Despite having to deal with a blown rear shock seal, Eisen handled the unfamiliar mount well and circulated near the front of the mixed pack, which included Vintage Women Experts and Intermediates, along with the Over 70 Experts, who proved that seven decades of life hadn’t slowed the desire to twist a throttle.

On Sunday, the Post-Vintage racers took to the track in the middle of a steady rainstorm and in bitterly cold wind. Once again, Rick Daniel was a multiple-class entrant; he emerged with wins in the AHRMA Open Age Expert and Historic 500cc Expert classes and a second overall in the Over 50 GP Expert class, riding machines from his stable of Yamahas.

Kyle Winton may only be in his early 30s, but he has at least a decade of Vintage racing on his résumé. Quickly adapting to his newly acquired Suzuki RM two-stroke, Winton rocketed to wins in the Open Age Expert, GP 3 250cc Expert and GP 3 125cc Expert classes.

Kyle Winton (107) won the GP 3 125cc Expert, GP 3 250cc Expert and Open Age GP Expert classes and also placed second in the Modern Support Two-Stroke Expert class.

In the Open Age class, Winton swapped moto wins with Yamaha jockey Jordan Smole in a duel that saw neither rider backing off the throttle for more than a fraction of a second throughout both motos.

In GP 3 action, Winton again swapped moto wins, this time with Suzuki pilot Tommy Dykes. Winton and Dykes seemed unfazed by the treacherous weather and battled to the checkered flag in both motos. Winton took the win in the all-important second moto to secure the overall, followed by Dykes, with Yamaha rider David MacDonald in third.
