BINGHAMTON, NY, MAR. 7, 2015
Hurd Motorsports, promoters of the world-class Broome-Tioga Sports Center, hosted the eighth round of their Winter Mud and Snow Scrambles Series. The series consists of 10 rounds running from November through April and utilizing the multiple motocross tracks, grass-track and single-track trails of this massive facility. This unique and challenging series continues to expand and has been attracting new racers but also continues to draw some of the most experienced and talented off-road riders from Upstate New York and beyond.
Round eight dawned under sunny skies and in chilly temperatures in the low 20s. Clouds rolled in late in the morning and light snow began to fall intermittently throughout the day, and the temperatures eventually rose to a balmy 30 degrees!
The racecourse for this round was shortened due to the deep snow that blanketed the facility’s massive grounds, and the Broome-Tioga track crew bulldozed down to the dirt surface to give riders a racecourse that was raceable.
When the green flag dropped for the start of the Super Open motorcycle scrambles, Marcus Scutt-Cornell, Daniel Conway, Kevin Kilmer, Ethan Livingston, Jon Bidlack and Alex Dzikiewicz led the pack out of the first turn and onto the racecourse.
When the leaders had completed the opening lap, Scutt-Cornell remained out front with the lead and was followed by Dzikiewicz, Kilmer, Hunter Bush, and Bidlack.
Scutt-Cornell continued to lead at the start of lap three, and the top five remained unchanged.
The top-five running order did not change until the final lap. Scutt-Cornell continued to lead. Kilmer passed Dzikiewicz to take second; Dzikiewicz was relegated to third. Bush and Bidlack remained fourth and fifth, respectively.
Scutt Cornell held on to take the checkers and the win. Kilmer, Dzikiewicz, Bush and Bidlack rounded out the top five.
When starter threw the green flag to start the Novice motorcycle scrambles, Jon Bidlack, Nicholas Wheeler, Tim Livingston, Jeff Elliott and Joshua Mudge led the pack out of the first turn.
When the leaders exited the scoring area at the start of lap two, Wheeler held the lead and was followed by Bidlack, Livingston, Elliott and Mudge.
Bidlack caught and passed Wheeler to take the lead on lap three; Wheeler was relegated to second. Livingston, Elliott and Mudge rounded out the top five.
The top five remained unchanged at the start of lap four.
When the lead riders exited the scoring area at the start of lap five, Wheeler was back in the lead, which pushed Bidlack back to second. Third, fourth and fifth were unchanged from the previous lap.
Wheeler held the lead for the next lap but was repassed on the white-flag lap by Bidlack, who then held on to take the win. Wheeler, Livingston, Elliott and Mudge closed out the top five.
When the flag dropped to signal the start of the AA/Expert motorcycle scrambles, Ian Howes, Michael Kenyon, Dzikiewicz, Scutt-Cornell, Craig Evans and Kilmer led the pack out of the first turn and onto the racecourse. When the leaders re-entered the motocross section of the course at the end of the opening lap, Kenyon held the point position and was followed by Dzikiewicz, Scutt-Cornell, Kilmer and Bush.
Kenyon continued to lead at the start of the third lap but dropped back to fourth on lap four, handing the lead to Dzikiewicz, with Scutt-Cornell and Kilmer in very close pursuit. Kenyon dropped off the leaders’ pace and was all alone in fourth. Bush continued to hold the fifth-place position.
Dzikiewicz held the lead for the next four laps and battled for the lead with Scutt-Cornell and Kilmer. Less than two bikelengths separated the top three, but Dzikiewicz held on and took the checkered flag for the win. Scutt-Cornell, Kilmer, Marshall Hurd and Bush completed the top five.
