Brothers Clint and Ryan Grafft came out on top of the 85cc Beginner and 450cc Beginner classes, respectively, at the A.V. Motoplex Ride Park during round two of the M2X Racing/MotocrossGiant.com Dirt Series.

Clint Grafft (25) dominated the 85cc Beginners at the A.V. Motoplex Ride Park.

Younger brother Clint started off his domination of the 85cc Beginner class by making his way into the top spot just a few corners into moto one. Brenden Bluff controlled second place, with Riley Jackson running a close third, ahead of Mario Ballestero and Dylan Chaussee.

Grafft totally dominated the moto, pulling well clear of second-place finisher Bluff. Jackson easily finished in the third spot, ahead of Ballestero and Chaussee.

Fred Steele (696) went 1-1 for the Senior Amateur-class victory.

The second moto two was pretty much a carbon copy of the first, as Grafft quickly made his way into the lead and steadily pulled away throughout the rest of the race for a most convincing 1-1 sweep of the field. Bluff had his YZ85 into the runner-up position the entire moto and fended off a last-lap challenge from Jackson to go 2-2 on the day. Ballestero went 4-4, over the 5-5 finishes of Chaussee and the 6-6 tally of Dylan Roberts.

Kawasaki-mounted Lance Austin pulled the trigger quickest to lead the opening 450cc Beginner moto, ahead of Ryan Grafft, Tim Switzer and Mark Grubb. These four riders engaged in a great four-way battle over the lead that would last up until the midway point, when Switzer gained the upper hand and started to pull away, taking Ryan along with him. Ryan stayed glued to Switzer’s back fender for the remainder of the moto, making him work for the win. Third place went to Grubb, over Austin and Johnny Schmitz.

Ryan Grafft (19) would get around Lance Austin (275) in both 450cc Beginner motos for the win. Mark Grubbs (308) finished third.

Austin proved his first-moto start was no fluke as he reeled off another holeshot in moto two. Ryan Grafft was all over Austin’s back wheel, with Switzer and Grubb keeping them both honest.

Ryan got around Austin for the lead on lap three. Switzer pushed Austin back another position a lap later. Switzer shadowed Ryan for a lap before Ryan upped his pace and started to inch away. The moto and the overall on the day belonged to Ryan Grafft, as he greeted the checkers a few seconds ahead of Switzer, who would go 1-2 for second overall in the final standings. Grubbs was again the third-place finisher, over Austin and Schmitz.

Slade Varola may have parked his 50cc bikes for good and just started concentrating on the slighter bigger 65cc machines, with predictably good results. Varola pulled off a 1-1 moto sweep in the 65cc (9-11) class. Peyton Marks, who’s no slouch on his KTM by any means, kept Varola in his sights en route to 2-2 finishes, over Jack Carrigg.

Varola and Marks pitted their smaller 65cc machines against the 85cc and 150cc four-stroke bikes in the 85cc Open class and came out on top. By the midway point, Varola had made his way to the front of the field in moto one, and he got there even quicker in the second moto. Marks would fly his KTM to a pair of second-place finishes. Tristin Mitchell went 5-3 for third, over the 7-4 score of Justin Lundin.

Cody Shepard (441) went 7-5 in the 250cc Novice class.

Abbott returned to put the hurt on the rest of the 50cc Open class with another decisive two-moto romp. Jackson finished second in moto one but failed to make the gate in moto two, handing the second-place trophy over to Braydon Tharp on his 3-2 finishes. Ethan Butts used consistent 4-4 rides to claim third overall. Fourth went to Landon Deckard on his 8-3 effort, followed by the 5-5 finishes of Robbie Stephenson and the 6-6 tally of Carson Newton.

Yamaha rider Austin Hess cleaned up in the 250cc Novice ranks. Hess used a pair of good starts to build early leads that he wouldn’t relinquish. Brandon Jennings and Jason Fichera had good battles throughout both races over second place, with Jennings going 3-2 to top the 2-3 tally of Fichera. Tyler Colvin rode his Honda to 4-6 finishes for fourth overall, ahead of the 5-4 score of Michael Oftzell and the 7-5 score of Cody Shepard.
