Riding his Greg Vietri/ Montgomeryville Cycle-sponsored Honda, Jake Shoemaker was one of five riders scoring double wins at Path Valley Speedway’s first motorcycle short track of the year. Shoemaker topped the 450cc Sportsman A and Open A finals. Other double winners on the day included Chris Abb, in the 500cc Two-Valve and Vintage classes; Matt Trout, who had an easy time winning the Open B and Sportsman B classes; Damon Ream, who lucked into the win in the 250cc Sportsman final after earning the victory in the 250cc B final; and Tyler Scott again outclassed the 65cc and 85 fields, although he had to work for the 85cc win for the first four laps.

Jake Shoemaker (55) topped the 450cc Sportsman A class at Path Valley Speedway. Dalton Gauthier (14A) finished fourth.

Derek Hersh led the tightly bunched field in the Open A final, with Justin Jones, Brandon Price and Shoemaker right there. Price had to check up in turn four on the opening lap, dropping back several spots. Shoemaker finished the opening lap in second, and the he got by Hersh for the lead on the second lap. After a few laps, Dalton Gauthier moved into fourth, and he took third on the seventh lap.

The 450cc Sportsman A win was a little easier, as Shoemaker was leading Gauthier, Jamison Minor and Price by the third turn. Minor took second at the end of the second lap, with Price displacing Gauthier for third on the following lap. On the final lap, Price dived under Minor between turns one and two to take second, which he then held to the end.

Shoemaker’s chance at a hat-trick third win was stopped by Ryan Varnes in the Open Twin contest, as he grabbed the lead ahead of Shoemaker, Minor, Kyle McGrane and Roy Miller. As the race wore on, the spacing gradually increased between each rider.

Ryan Varnes (68A) and Jake Shoemaker (55) finished first and second, respectively, in Open Twin competition.

Damon Ream took the 250cc B lead from Austin Kellett at the end of the opening lap. Tate Adamson took second on the following lap. Ream won by three bikelengths, Adamson as runner-up. Wheatley pressured Kellett for third in the closing laps but had to settle for fourth.

Being the only A rider in the 250cc Sportsman division, Miller led the start, over Wheatley, Chris Johnson and Ream. Ream was in third at the end of the opening lap, and then it became a battle for the lead when Miller’s pipe came loose on the second lap. Ream took the point position off turn two on the seventh lap to claim his second victory.

Damon Ream (17) won the 250cc Sportsman contest. Robert Wheatley (11) was runner-up.

Miller fixed his bike problems in time for the Over 30 final. He took the front spot away from early leader Darren Phillips going into turn three on the opening lap. Jerry Alexander took second as they started the fourth lap. Meanwhile, Rich Mellinger got his Rotax rolling, taking second on the following lap and then moving up to challenge Miller.

Over the last two laps, Mellinger tried high and low, trying to get around the screaming two-stroke Suzuki. Miller took the win, but he probably wouldn’t have if the race had lasted another lap.

Roy Miller (56) leads Rich Mellinger (86) in the late laps of the Over 30 final.

Hillclimber Phil Libhart easily took the Over 40 victory, over Phillips and Mellinger.

Lowell Wherley led Phillips, Jim Chapman and Frank Primrose at the start of the Over 50 final. While the front three pulled away, staying close to one another, Phillips finally got by Wherley going into turn three on the fifth lap for the lead, and he then held on it to the end.

Darren Phillips (4), Lowell Wherley (28) and Jim Chapman (72) went one, two, three in the Over 50 final.

New Yorker Brandon Newman shot in front of Tyler Scott, Jared Florian and Kyle Lonnen at the start of the 85cc final. Scott took first as they started the second lap, but Newman stayed close, trying to make the outer edge of the groove work in his effort to stay close. That came to an end on the third lap when he slid out in the middle of turns three and four.

Tyler Scott (70) topped the 85cc (7-11) field. Brandon Newman (61) ended up fifth.
