Round 2: Lemoore Raceway

LEMOORE, CA, APR. 25, 2015

The CFTA team made its way to Lemoore, California, knowing that there was a threat of rain but confident that they would race. Saturday morning, the promise of rain had come true – it was raining lightly. Rather than rain being a negative thing, it was positive. The CFTA managed to be water-conscious on this day (what with the ongoing drought in California) and let Mother Nature do the watering of the track. With a little grooming in the pits, the bikes were on the track just a little later than originally planned, and then the rain stopped, leaving a partly cloudy and very pleasant afternoon – beautiful racing weather!

This venue was a new one for all of the riders. Not one of them had ever ridden on this track before, and it was enjoyed by all. The facility is neat and clean and boasts wonderful grandstands, a large pit area, and a crew that is hard to beat and easy to work with, and who provided great track prep. The track is a hard-packed, one-fifth-mile, blue-groove car track with banking most of the way around. Sliding in and sliding out, it was great fun for the riders, including 12 quad racers who showed up to compete.

As is customary at CFTA events, there were riders who are familiar to followers of the series, as well as some new faces, making for a total of more than a hundred riders racing in 16 main events.

The CFTA is proud and honored to announce the title sponsorship of VP Racing Fuels, the official race fuel for the 2015 CFTA AMA Championship Series. VP Racing Fuels signed on as the series title sponsor on April 13, 2015. Founded by Steve Burns, they have been providing fuels for racing since 1974, and their products are considered by many to be the best racing fuels available today.

Quads were the first on the track, brushing off the dust and laying down some rubber on the tacky track surface. In the morning, there was concern about too much water, but by late afternoon the track needed to be watered. Another day of safe and competitive racing ensued, starting with the Pee Wees and ending with 13 riders competing in the Pro race for money. Quads followed, ending the day’s event.

Jerry Kennedy showed up with his new local Harley-Davidson 750 rider Andrew Luker to enjoy the day. Jerry rode well, staying on two wheels all the way to the finish line in the Senior Amateur class.

Another well-known old-time fast rider, Donnie Harrell, came out of the woodwork to race at Lemoore. He won the Senior Amateur class. Mark Hunger and Mike Pitschner followed Harrell to the finish.

Rob Lanoy and Cory Rich enjoyed close competition in the Senior Expert class, mixing it up with Tim Niles. At the checkers, it was Lanoy, Rich, and Niles.

Darrel Beardsley not only won the Open Amateur class but also volunteered to flag for most of the day as well. Blake Thompson kept Beardsley honest through their 10-lap race, but he never got the opening he was looking for and ended up finishing second, followed by Brad Miller. Kenzie Rae continues to go faster at each event, finishing fourth in this nine-rider class.

The youngsters in the PW50 Heads Up class – Ashton Carlson, Jacob Jimenez and Christian Jimenez – finished their race in that order.

Zaden Florez was flying on this track en route to winning the 85cc Expert class, in front of Nathan Agrifoglio, Tucker Mount and Branden Weller.

Florez also won the 85cc Expert Heads Up class, followed by Weller and Jacob Cascio, who was competing in his first races since breaking his leg during the 2014 series. A broken leg didn’t slow this youngster down at all.

Jack Jones and Jeff Gonzales put on a show aboard their vintage Yamaha 500s in the afternoon, trading the front spot back and forth on the track in the Vintage 500cc Expert Money heat race. Jones finished first in that competition.

In the main, Jones got the holeshot, with Brad Spencer in hot pursuit. Spencer twisted the throttle, working the inside and the outside for the first three laps of the race before he managed to get by Jones on the outside. Paul Herman and Gonzales followed them to the checkers.

Mike Rush proved to be the man to beat in the Open Pro Money class. Rush got the lead in this 13-rider competition right from the start, with Chris McDougal close behind. It didn’t take those two long to pull away from the rest of the pack. Behind them, Bradley Spencer Jr. was leading the second pack of riders. Kayl Kolkman finished lap one in seventh place, and at the end of the race he finished fourth. John Vanderlaan, who has improved his speed and skill on the track, finished fifth. Brandon Bergen and Andrew Luker were sixth and seventh, respectively.

The Quad Pro event had two red flags and restarts following a couple of wild crashes. Andrew Rogers put on the brake and gave his quad gas to avoid hitting another rider head on. When he did that, his quad went into the air, throwing him off and severely damaging the quad. He was out for the night.

Chad Efird caused the second red flag and single-file restart. He then came from last to finish this contest at the front of the pack. Tim Baptista and Mikey Zavala followed Efird to the checkers.

Dylan Shumate was thrilled to carry the checkers after winning both the 85/150cc Amateur youth class and the 65/110cc Sour-Stroke Youth class.

Dylan’s uncle Kevin Keeran also carried the checkers at this event, taking the victory in the Vet Expert Over 35 class. Paul Ott and Anthony Mitchell rounded out that podium.

A fabulously successful and fun event came to a close with a line of riders at the little track office, waiting for their envelopes of money earned and talking about the fun they’d had on the track after the tenuous start to the day. This was not a pool-table surface for the riders but a fast and competitive track. The CFTA will return to Lemoore Raceway in September.

The next round of the CFTA Championship Series will take place on May 31 at Cal Expo in Sacramento, California. This round, the Vintage/Amateur Sacramento Mile, will take place on the same groomed track run by the AMA Grand National riders on Saturday, May 30. This is a pre-entry-only event, and pre-entry can be completed at https://cfta.thundertix.com/events/67573.

Following the Sacramento Mile, the CFTA Championship Series will move to the Salinas Rodeo Grounds in Salinas, California, for a two-day event, including a Half Mile TT (Tourist Trophy) race and a short track on Sunday. The track will be a well-groomed cushion on both days.
