Race Report by Patty Blais, ATV Open Expert
I always love this race. It’s fast and fun, pretty much a desert race with laps. Our Open Expert row was 15-wide. Some guys actually had to stagger and start behind us.
My start was pretty funny, as I couldn’t find the shift lever (due to a new footpeg position) and I was in the back of the pack by the first turn. Everyone was flying as fast as they could on this fifth-gear-pinned course.
After the first few miles and riding just behind my good friend Gilbert [Davila], we saw a friend of ours lying face down, unconscious, in the dirt berm, with his quad still in the middle of the course. He crashed hard! We both stopped and stayed with him, moved his quad off the course, sat with him for a bit, and made sure he was okay. He’s a big, strong guy, and he didn’t want us to stay with him – too bad! We then went for help, and the Hilltoppers MC crew got to him right away. We later found out that a fellow racer had actually struck him while he was on the ground, before we got to him, running him over, and just left him there. The guy actually posted his GoPro footage of this, which makes me pretty sick to my stomach. He will be dealt with later. We don’t do this to fellow racers – ever!
After many minutes and making sure our friend was okay, both Gilbert and I took off again around the course. It’s really hard to be in race mode after seeing someone in a situation like that. We both felt so bad for our friend.
Anyway, I just did my thing and started passing everyone that had gotten by us – which was all the quads and sidehacks. I passed back all the hacks, a bunch of Novices, some Ammies [Amateurs] and some Experts. I was happy to finish, and my Blais Racing Services-prepped TRX450R’s motor is beyond awesome! It always puts a big fat smile on my face! I ended up finishing eighth Open Expert and 13th overall out of a field of 40 total ATVs.
Thank you, Hilltoppers MC, for all your hard work and all the cheers around the course!
See you at the races!
