Race Report by Braydon Bland, First Overall Amateur
The week before round five of USRA, it snowed a little bit at my house, so I was hoping that there was a chance it could have been wet, but when we arrived there early Saturday morning, it was dusty, as usual. I watched the Minis and then got ready for the big bikes. There wasn’t a good line, really, anywhere, and it was basically just who had more power.

Braydon Bland once again garnered first place overall among the Amateurs at the fifth round of the Utah Sportsman Racers Association Desert Series.

After the riders’ meeting, we all went and warmed up our bikes, and the banner went up for the Experts. I watched my teammate Skyler [Howes] get a first-kick [start], but after about 50 feet, I could no longer see anyone because of the big dust cloud from the roost.

Then the banner went up for us Amateurs, and we shut our bikes off. The banner dropped and I managed to get a good jump but immediately got outpowered by the 250cc and 450cc bikes. I then was running around 15th or 20th by the time we all got settled onto the trail.

After pushing, trying to make all the time back up, I came upon the leader. He was stuck behind an Expert, and I quickly made my way around him and the Expert. I then pushed the rest of the loop and pitted.

As I was pitting, [the second-place rider] passed me in the pits, but I was able to keep the lead while he was pitting.

After getting a little turned around on the second loop with two others who came upon us – also confused, not being able to find the course – we found the course in less than probably 30 to 45 seconds, and continued to race. I could no longer get him off my tail, though. We battled back and forth, switching places all the way to the finish. Come the last mile, it was super sketchy, with both of us hanging it out there for the win!
