Colton Smith scored three wins and three other riders each took a pair of class wins as the Baltimore County Trail Riders hosted their second short track of the season at the Mason Dixon Fairgrounds. Smith topped the 450cc A, Open Sportsman A and Adult 150cc finals, while Dylan Cunningham took the 50cc Chain Drive (7-8) and 65cc finals, Jeremy Orr topped the 450cc B and Open Sportsman B finals, and Lowell Wherley led the old guys, winning the Over 40 and Over 50 finals, while his son Austin scored the 250cc Sportsman win.
After his aggressive style caused him to slide out on the straight and get hit by another rider in his heat race, Colton Smith grabbed the lead in the Open A final, ahead of Cameron Smith, Austin Wherley and Frankie Valentin. Smith then pulled away, winning by half a lap. Wherley pressured Cameron the entire distance but ended up third.
Cameron Smith led Wherley, Colton Smith and Colin Cunningham at the start of the Open Sportsman A final, but coming off the fourth turn, Colton towed Wherley past Cameron and they took first and second, respectively. This time, Cameron pressured Wherley for second, but he had to settle for the third spot.
For Orr, the closest he came to losing was in the Open B contest, when the Over 40 rider on his machine in the preceding event rode off the track off the second turn instead of returning to the staging area off turn four. Luckily, they got the machine back to the staging area within two minutes!
Off the start, Orr took the lead from Justin Haag, Billy Snodgrass Jr. and Jeremiah Johnson. After a few laps, Orr and Haag were comfortably ahead, while Johnson pressured Snodgrass to the end. Snodgrass was third and Johnson finished fourth.
The Open Sportsman B final was a little hectic off the second turn, with T.J. Irvin taking the lead, ahead of Orr, Brett Johnson and Ben Ludlow. At the end of the third lap, Orr took the lead. Ludlow took third on next lap.
For Lowell Wherley, both the Over 40 and Over 50 wins were similar: He grabbed the lead off turn two and gradually added to it.
In the Over 40 contest, Chris Hathaway and Sean Simmons followed at the start. Simmons took second at the end of the second lap.
In the Over 50 contest, Dave Smith and Jim Chapman followed Wherley, and though they stayed close, the order remained the same to the end.
Austin Wherley was helped in the 250cc Sportsman class when Nathan Reichert fell in the third turn, giving him a little cushion in the confusion. Robert Wherley, Caleb Scheide and Doug Cook followed. Scheide took second off turn two on the fifth lap.
Reichert grabbed the 250cc B lead off turn two and checked out. Tyler Rylee, Ben Bosley and Scheide battled for second. Rylee started dropping back as Bosley and Scheide moved up. Bosley ended up as runner-up, and Scheide finished in the third spot. Rylee ended up sixth.
For the first time in a while, there were enough riders in the 50cc Chain Drive class to run separate age divisions. Dylan Cunningham and Tyler Hinson blew by an earlier leader off turn four on the opening lap. Dylan’s twin brother, Tyler, started moving up, taking third on the second lap and then second a few laps later.
By the third turn of the 65cc final, Dylan was in the lead, followed by Ethan Stroh, Dominick Cooper and Tyler. The order stayed the same to the end.
Mason Farro again took the 85cc-class victory. Dominick Cooper and Ethan Stroh battled for second most of the way. Cooper was running much better than in his heat race, after his mechanic (that would be his dad) forgot to turn on the gas, but Stroh got under him as they started the final lap and took second.
Justin Haag led the 125cc Two-Stroke/150 Four-Stroke final off turn two, but Colin Cunningham was first off turn four, and he held on until the end. After Chase Smith crashed his way to the rear, Matt Langrehr then pressured Haag for second, slipping under him off turn two on the sixth lap.
