Johnnie Torres went 2-1 to top the 250cc Novices at the opening round of the M2X Racing’s Smokin’ Summer Series (and no, he didn’t save it).

Johnnie Torres flew his YZ250F to 2-1 moto finishes to claim the overall 250cc Novice-class honors at the A.V. Motoplex Ride Park during the opening round of the M2X Racing’s Smokin’ Summer Motocross Series.

Dustin Pulliam (817, right) held off Triston Stephenson (259) for the 450cc Pro-class win.

Torres wasted little time making his way to the front of the field when the gate dropped for opening-moto racing. Suzuki-mounted Parker Beswick settled into second place, ahead of Jared Reid, Austin Hess, Michael Oetzell and Daniel Lundin. Beswick and Reid battled over second place while Torres stayed just out of their reach, a few seconds ahead of them.

Torres appeared to have the win in the bag until the final circuit, when a bobble handed the top spot over to Reid, who had just finally found a way around Beswick. Torres held on for the second-place finish, over Beswick. Oetzell finished fourth, over Randy Englehardt, Lundin and Hess.

Cody Reid (84) came out on top of both the 450cc Novice and Big Bike Open classes.

Torres was off to another great start in moto two and soon had Reid knocking on his back door. Reid pressured Torres for a lap before going down and dropping to the back of the pack. Beswick moved up into the runner-up position, but there was no catching Torres this time out, as he led every lap of the second moto to see the checkers first and wrap up the overall victory on his 2-1 tally. Beswick finished all by himself in second place for second overall, ahead of the 1-6 effort of Reid, the 4-3 tally of Oetzell and the 5-4 score of Englehardt.

KTM-mounted Kyler Burton was untouchable in the first 65cc Beginner race. Burton started things off with the holeshot and then proceeded to increase his lead with each passing lap. Austin Abernathy gated in second place and did his best to hold off Ryan Chaussee, but that only lasted until about the midway point. Nathan Jackson, who was trying out his 50cc Cobra in the 65cc class, would finish fourth, behind Abernathy and ahead of Tyler Cortesi, in fifth.

Kyler Burton (121) swept both motos of the 65cc Beginner class.

Abernathy won the drag race to the first turn in moto two and would run out front for a little over a lap before Burton dropped him back to second place. Once out front, Burton would check out for a double-moto sweep of the class. Second place was all Chaussee’s; he was followed by Abernathy, Cortesi and Jackson.
