AMA/CFTA California Flat Track Association Championship Series

On July 18, we ran a cushion flat-track event in the searing Chowchilla heat. Our risky (some said “stupid”) experiment was a success. It was pleasant under the covered arena and the track was very “racey.” Who knew that you could run a cushion track in the sweltering California summer?

Superb track prep by Craig Scroggins, installing shade cloth on the west side (which cost more than a thousand dollars, but it was worth every penny), and a kickass water wagon with remote control designed by Rob Lanoy were the formula that made it happen.

The track was a bit deep at our Friday practice session, and we apologize to those who don’t like deeper cushions, but everyone except one person seemed to have great fun. A wheelie contest, a backward race and practice start drills made the night fun for all.

There will be a practice session on Friday, August 7. The gates will open at 4 p.m., and practice will run from 5 to 9. Quads and karts are welcome. Admission is $25 per adult, $20 per youth, and $10 for spectators. RV camping is $25, and regular camping is $10.

We’re going to dink around with a little TT track. Practice nights are about experiments, introducing new ideas, and giving everyone maximum track time.

On Saturday, August 8, there will be a Feel Like a Pro Dirt training camp at the Chowchilla Afterburner. GNC Pro rider number 54, Mikey Rush, will be the guest instructor. Brian Bartlow says that the class is beginning to fill up. We heard several folks say that they were noticeably faster after taking the school, so it works. Team CFTA’s goal is to have the fastest riders on the West Coast! Train in the morning, practice in the afternoon, race in the evening! Here are some bits and pieces of what’s going on with our organization these days…

Our November event in Salinas is now open to all. Do we run two rounds on one day or just one final round? Let us know your thoughts.

Our state-of-the-art water wagon kicked butt! We have a list of refinements to make it better. Our goal is a consistently high-quality track.

We bought a John Deere 2040 tractor. We are now looking for a disk, ripper and box scraper. And yes, we are still shopping for a commercial van – we need more storage space for our traveling show.
