The night before the Moto GP turned out to be a nice, comfortable evening, with some great racing. A little extra prep after practice made for a smooth track, with plenty of room to pass on the wide turns of the quarter-mile flat track. With the Moto GP in town, there were lots of nice bikes in attendance.
There was a moment of silence for National number 69, Jethro Halbert, who had passed away due to injuries sustained while competing in California.
Some unbelievable Bultacos were entered for the Astro Cup. Promotor, track guru, and speedway and ice racer “Gentleman Jim” Terchila was entered, as was multiple-time Mid-America Speedway Champion B.J. Fesselmeyer.
Charlie Roberts ended up taking the win after a good battle with Fesselmeyer, and Terchila took it home in third and said he had a blast on the vintage Bultaco.
The Speedway riders were liking the track. Fesselmeyer was setting a horrendous pace in the heat race, practically holding the throttle wide open through turns three and four for all the fans in the pits and grandstands, throwing out some high-speed roost from the 500cc, 75-horsepower, methanol-burning Jawa engine in a bike with no brakes. These bikes weigh in at 170 pounds and go from zero to 60 mph in three seconds!
Mick Kirkness did not finish his heat race, due to a mechanical problem.
It was all Fesselmeyer in the main, with veteran speedway and long-track champion Dan Weicht in second and Terchila in third.
The Open class had 14 bikes in the main. Local rider Brandon Wilhelm took the win, ahead of Chris Boone. Mick Kirkness had better luck than he did on the loaner speedway bike, coming in third.
Another local rider and longtime racer of flat track, Bryan Stoughton, took the win in the Senior Over 50 class, ahead of Dennis Rose.
