Big Time Speedway held its annual September 11 tribute at the third round of the Golden State Series, honoring all military, first responders and other public-service employees. The weather was perfect – cool and comfortable. As is their custom, “the Steves” – promoters Steve Elstins and Steve Stasiefski – put together another perfect oval racetrack surface and a challenging Billy Janniro Challenge track.

Some 140 entrants competed in a total of 83 races on this night, including speedway, flat track, quads and lots of fun! Division One rider Luke Becker’s dad said that the Big Time Speedway track at Prairie City OHV Park is Luke’s favorite track to ride.

The evening’s events began with a military color guard presenting the colors, which was followed by Kimmie Gould singing the “Star Spangled Banner” and the awarding of medals to all of the participants. Racing began promptly at 6 p.m. with the Junior Speedway riders, and the racing once again progressed smoothly throughout the evening.

The singing of the national anthem and the presentation by the color guard was part of the 9/11 tribute.

Sebastian “Big Daddy” Palmese and six-time AMA National Division One Speedway rider Billy Janniro went head to head on the track in the 250cc Division One race. Racing wheel to wheel and thrilling the spectators, it was Palmese who got to the checkers first.

Earlier in the day, while being interviewed together, Janniro and Palmese talked about their riding, Janniro’s career, and Palmese’s dreams.

Talking about Palmese, Janniro commented that Palmese is further along in his racing career than Janniro himself was at that same age. Palmese began riding motorcycles at the tender age of 5, which gives him five more years of experience than Janniro had when he started riding at age 10. With more experience and seat time, Janniro said that Palmese could easily follow in his racing footsteps. However, Janniro also mentioned that he planned to continue finishing first for the time being.

Palmese is well on his way, already having earned the following accolades: 2015 250cc Junior California State Champion, 2013 and 2014 AMA 150cc Youth National Speedway Champion, 2013 Mini 150cc AMA/ FIM Junior Speedway Silver Cup Champion, and 2013 and 2014 Mini 150cc First Division California State Champion. A very well-mannered and likeable young man, Sebastian Palmese has only just begun.

As for Janniro, he will be competing for his sixth AMA National title on Friday, September 18.

In other racing, the Billy Janniro Challenge events continue to be a riders’ favorite. On this day, Palmese and Dylan Wagner each took the riders to the checkers in front of the split 16-and-Under class, and Billy Janniro kept his $100 bill by winning the Billy Janniro Adult Challenge event. Billy has had to give it up in each of the last two series races.
