A big party with a few races thrown in, or the Woodstock of motorcycle races – whatever one may choose to call the A Day In The Dirt, it continues to be the three-day race that attracts racers from throughout Southern California and from even greater distances.

This coverage is from Saturday, which featured the much-awaited Adult Mini Races, held on the new Ascot track that was as fun as could be and par excellence for four-stroke minis and two-smokers, too. Mike Bierman and crew did a great job of gathering people for this race. One of those who made the long-distance trek was Anita Gallegos, who came out from Montana to race her number-610 Honda that was prepped by Hott Mess Bierman Racing.

“The racing was great,” Bierman reported. “Everyone loved the track and the downhill starts. The track was fun and fast – just technical enough for the better riders, and tame enough for the beginners. The weather was perfect, and there were no injuries.”

After all was said and done, Bierman concluded, “It was an epic day of racing.”

Let’s go check out the racing pictures!

A lone minibike – certainly a reminder of how we all started out in the sport of motorcycling.

That lone minibike just happens to be owned by Jim McNear (54), who raced it on this day. As you can see, he had a big grin that will last a while.

These guys are longtime mini riders, and you just know it’s going to be a good race when they line up. Chris Alamangos (42) is to the left, with Dean Greenman (125) to the right and Jackrabbits rider Dwayne Franks (86) stuck right in the middle.

Dwayne Franks (86) was at his very best on this day. He must be practicing at his place in the desert.

Wow! What a collection of hats, shirts, jerseys and posters! All quality stuff that helps perpetuate the years of racing memories from Ascot Park. Thanks, Chris, for the shirts – I’m wearing one right now.

FMF came out with their display, and they had this collage of team members throughout the years. The lower right-hand corner shows a pack of FMF riders taking the first-turn sweeper at Saddleback Park. Dave Carlson was the leader, and yours truly took this photo back in the mid-’70s.

This concludes our coverage of A Day In The Dirt. After experiencing everything that went on, we are concluding with the opinion that this event is both a big party with a few races added in and also a Woodstock of motorcycle racing!
