Westwinds Golf Course at George Air Force Base once saw golfers leisurely wander from hole to hole, trying to get their lowest score. The now-disused course has been silent for some years, but on Sunday, May 8, 2016, it roared with the sound of old motorcycle engines as the Southwest Vintage Committee brought vintage (1974 or older) racing motorcycles to the high desert with the first running of the Victorville Vintage Scrambles.

Scrambles were a precursor to modern-day motocross racing. Run on natural terrain rather than man-made courses, any place with hills and valleys to ride up or down or trees to ride around is a good place for a scrambles course. This means that defunct golf courses are excellent places to build scrambles courses, and that is what the Southwest Vintage Committee did, bringing life back to the old course for the first time in years.

The event sent motorcycle enthusiasts back in time, as the bikes – and even some of the riders – represented some of the favorite machines and men (and women) from bygone days. Taking to the racetrack were such makes as Bultaco, Triumph, BSA, Husqvarna, Maico, CZ and Ossa, many of them being raced by their original riders, who are now in their 60s or even 70s, including multitime AMA Motocross Champion Gary Jones of Helendale, California, who finished third in the 250cc Expert class.

Saturday’s Bike Show was a great success, and included such unique entries as John Rice’s number-one Long Beach Honda replica, built by C.W. McIntosh.

Races were run in both morning and afternoon sessions, with a rider’s final finishing positions in the two motos determining their final finish. Class winners included Scott Simpson in Classic 500cc Novice, Darren Gauvin in Classic 500cc Intermediate, Matt Parsons in Classic 500cc Expert, Patrick Irvin in Sports 250cc Intermediate, Steve Erikson in Sports 250cc Expert, Greg Landers in Sport 500cc Expert, Roland Rodriguez in Over 60 Expert, and Mike Brooks in Over 70 Expert.

The Southwest Vintage Committee is hoping to run more events such as these on similar courses, but nothing had been set yet. However, some of these same bikes and riders will be racing at Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernardino (which will also be hosting an AMA National Motocross event on May 28) in the So Cal Vintage MX Classic on June 4.
