The thermometer showed 26 degrees Fahrenheit as the gates at Cahuilla Creek MX Park opened at 7 a.m. on February 25. Reports from those who camped overnight remarked that the temperatures dropped into the teens, leaving frost on vehicles and frozen rain puddles around the facility. In spite of the bone-chilling temperatures, the day turned clear and sunny.

Round two of the 2017 CALVMX/ 100% Regional Series saw the club playing host to the opening round of AHRMA’s Preston Petty-sponsored National Series. The Saturday schedule was exclusively for the pre-1975-era machines, and a marvelous 120 entries filled the scheduled nine motos. A stroll through the pits revealed seldom-seen brands, such as an early-model Montesa Cappra with an orange tank, a Rickman Metisse, an exquisite 1954 Velocette, and Ariel, Cotton and AJS machinery, along with examples of early Bultacos, CZs and Maicos.

On the track, Husqvarna rider Ross Thompson continued his strong performances in Vintage Sportsman 250cc Intermediate competition, collecting the overall victory with a 1-1 sweep of the class.

Thompson powered into the lead at the start of moto one and swiftly built up a multibike lead over the rest of the class. Behind Thompson, Husqvarna rider Rickert Haag and CZ rider Dana Yenawine vied for the runner-up positions. Thompson went unopposed for the moto win, with Haag and Yenawine crossing behind him.

In the second stanza, Thompson again displayed near-Expert-level speed as he dominated the moto from start to finish. His bike running perfectly, along with flawless riding, saw Thompson easily clinch the overall victory. With strong 3-3 finishes, Yenawine snared second overall, followed by Haag (2-4) in third.

Ross Thompson (180) went 1-1 for the overall Vintage Sportsman 250cc Intermediate victory.

The Vintage Sportsman 500cc Expert class featured three of AHRMA’s fastest competitors. Gutting out a body-numbing night in his (unheated) vintage panel-truck bike hauler, Yamaha rider Rick Daniel faced off against Husqvarna rider Zane Amaro and Kawasaki jockey Jim Buckalew.

The first moto saw Amaro and Daniel vying for the top spot as soon as the starting gate dropped. The lead changed numerous times, with no quarter given by either rider. Amaro slid off in the back section of the course late in the moto, giving Daniel the chance to pull away. At the checkers, it was Daniel taking the moto win, followed by Amaro and Buckalew.

Looking to make amends for his first-moto gaffe, Amaro barreled onto the course at the start of moto two, with Daniel mere feet behind. Replicating their performances of the first moto, the two waged a hard and clean duel for the top position. Amaro never set a wheel wrong and stormed to both the moto and overall wins, followed by Daniel and Buckalew.

Zane Amaro (90Z) came back from a first-moto mishap to garner the second-moto win – and the overall Vintage Sportsman 500cc Expert victory.

Classic 500 Expert action featured two brands seldom seen in recent years in Vintage racing. Matt Parsons, on his immaculate red-colored Rickman-Triumph four-stroke, dueled with Andrew Blackburn, on a 1969 Montesa 360 Cappra, its distinctive orange-colored tank and fenders easily spotted on the track. In both motos, the distinct rumble of Parsons’ big British single and the bark of Blackburn’s two-stroke Spanish steed could be heard around the track.

Andrew Blackburn (206) tallied a 2-2 score for runner-up overall in the Classic 500 Expert class.

Parson’s meticulous riding took him to a two-moto sweep of the class, with Blackburn nipping at his rear wheel in both motos for a well-earned second overall.

After experimenting with a unique AJS-Honda hybrid in practice, former factory AJS rider Doug Grant reverted to his normal two-stroke-powered AJS Stormer and made his return to competition a successful outing by topping both motos in the AHRMA portion of the Vintage Over 60 Experts contest, followed by Ariel rider Kelly Shane and Montesa-mounted Steve Erickson.
