Led by Dan Bromley’s Open A and 450cc Sportsman A wins, 12 of the 21 finals at the Pennsylvania Short Track held at the Mason Dixon Fairgrounds saw double winners. With the exception of Colton Smith doing a “human bowling ball” into the opening turn, both races were very similar: Bromley leading off turn two, with Nick Henderson behind him.

Behind those two riders, the Open A final had Jeremy Orr, Austin Wherley and Cory Strickler following. Strickler got by Wherley off turn two for fourth on the fifth lap.

The 450cc Sportsman A contest saw Smith making a (by his standards) conservative start in third, followed by Orr, Strickler and Wherley. Orr took third off turn two on the fifth lap, making the top three the same in both races.

Lowell Wherley winning the Over 50 class at this venue is nothing new, but his victory over Pro Hillclimb champion Phil Libhart in the Over 40 contest was a surprise.

In the Over 50 final, Lou Smith took the lead, ahead of Wherley, Billy Snodgrass and Walt Steffy, off the second turn. Wherley took command before turn three on the third lap.

Whether Libhart was a little tired from chasing the younger Wherley, Austin, in the preceding final, Lowell led Libhart, Chris Hathaway and Sean Simmons at the start of the Over 40 final. Libhart stayed close, and at the line there was about a bikelength margin of victory for Lowell.

The previous final had been the 250cc Sportsman A & B final, which saw Austin Wherley leading Libhart, Nick Henderson, Mike Poe and Tyler Eggleton. Libhart stayed very close, trying to rattle the youngster all the way to the end. Poe did a 180 in the middle of turns one and two and then blasted through the inner berm and rejoined the race, losing a spot that he would regain a few laps later.

Austin Wherley (11A) and Phil Libhart (517) went one and two in the 250cc Sportsman A & B final.

Libhart trailed Chris Hathaway at the start of the Over 30 final, with Steve Lerch, Albert Cook and Chris Johnson behind them. Libhart took command heading into turn three on the fifth lap, while Jedediah Haines started coming through the field, getting by Lerch off turn two on the final lap.

Phil Libhart (910) and Chris Hathaway (84) finished first and second, respectively, in the Over 30 contest.

Nick Henderson was another double winner, easily taking the Vintage Super Lightweight victory, over John Lambert and Rick Kohlbus, and also topping Mike Poe and Austin Wherley for the Adult 150cc win.

Logan McGrane pulled away from the rest of the field in the 150cc Air-Cooled Youth (9-15) final, leaving Jess Reynolds, Dylan Cunningham and Colton Murphy to battle it out for second. Murphy took command of the runner-up spot on the fifth lap.

McGrane easily took the 85cc (7-11) victory, helped by Murphy’s earning a third-row start. McGrane had a nice lead from the get-go, with Dylan Cunningham, Dominick Cooper – the only 85cc (12-15) entrant – Murphy and Tyler Cunningham battling for second. Cooper took second on the third lap, while Murphy took third at the end of the sixth lap.

Tyler Eggleton went wire to wire en route to winning the 450cc Sportsman B final. Jedediah Haines, Open B winner Justin Haag, and Zach Mullen were behind him. After battling for the first half, Haag slipped into second on the fifth lap, while Haines stayed close.

Tyler Eggleton (29) was the 450cc Sportsman B winner.
