Big Time Speedway was excited to become – for the first time ever – a player in the 2017 AMA District 36 Flat Track Black Plate Series. This event was the first of two District 36 races that will take place at the Big Time Speedway oval cushion short track in the Prairie City SVRA OHV Park in Rancho Cordova, California. The race was well attended by a full stable of more than 110 entries, from Pee Wees to Seniors and with riders in every class in between.

Sammy Tanner, a well-known name around the racing community, was on hand as the grand marshal for this special event. Tanner’s history includes being inducted into the AMA Hall of Fame as a seven-time AMA Grand National winner, including four wins at his famous hometown track, Ascot, in Los Angeles. Tanner became known as the “Flying Flea” due to his short stature and light weight.

To start off the events of the day, Sammy Halbert was at the track at sunrise for his 8 a.m. flat-track school. The group of students started early in the morning with an equipment check, followed by four hours of training that included individual time with Halbert for each of the students.

At the end of the class, there was a very happy group of riders, pleased with the new skills they’d obtained and anxious to race, slide and challenge the track in the evening races. Halbert said the track was “perfect for a Sammy School.” During his class, Halbert rode several of the students’ bikes to check their setups and give them pointers.

On one of the hottest days of 2017 so far, the Big Time Speedway crew were “doin’ it right” and the track was outstanding for the races.

Orchestrated just like any other AMA District 36 race, afternoon practice was followed by a riders’ parade, the singing of the national anthem, opening ceremonies, and 26 heat races, followed by 22 main events. The night was completed just after 9 p.m.

In the heat races, the top Open A riders included Halbert, Hunter Brooks, Stephen Sikorski and Tony Meiring.

In the Dash For Cash, Brooks proved to be a force to be reckoned with on this cushion short track. Halbert won the Dash, with Brooks four or five bikelengths behind.

Regular racing started with the little ones on the Pee Wee bikes and quickly moved into the other classes.

Dominic De Mario, one of Halbert’s morning students, took the 85cc class home.

Justin Anselmi was first, in front Kyle Raggio, in the 250cc A class.

At 50 years old, Jon Nunez rides like he’s in his 20s. He easily won the Senior A class, sharing the podium with runner-up James McAllister and third-place finisher Mike Pitschner.

Bobbie McDonnell was first to the checkers in the Vintage Two-Stroke contest, in front of Donnie Darrah.

At the end of the night, the riders were awarded with ribbons, cash payouts, and the promise of another AMA District 36 event, which will take place on June 17 at the Prairie City SVRA OHV Park. The Big Time Speedway promoters are grateful for the support of the riders, the staff and the sponsors that support the series.
