The steel skid shoes and Class C traction-shod machines of flat-track racing returned to the Camp Lockett Event and Equestrian Facility in Campo, California, for round one of the 2017 CALVMX/ 100%-sponsored six-event series. The two-day event offered classes for every type of wheeled vehicle, ranging from traditional flat-track machinery, knobby-tired bikes and karts to quads, three-wheelers and rope-start minibikes. The one-sixth-mile oval held up remarkably well, thanks to excellent track preparation by the Camp Lockett staff.

If flat-track racing had an Ironman award for the number of classes entered on a race weekend, Shawn Chamlee would definitely be a strong candidate. A member of the Booze Fighters Motorcycle Club Race Team, Chamlee entered the Post-Vintage 600cc Intermediate, ’70s Singles Intermediate, Open Intermediate and Vet Over 35 Intermediate classes on Saturday and repeated that number on Sunday. Chamlee made the most of his track time, scoring seven first-place finishes and a second-place tally over the course of the two-day event.

Shawn Chamlee (3B) scored seven victories out of eight attempts in four different classes over the weekend.

Whether it’s a motocross course or a dirt oval, a match-up between Tom DeCrescente and Tanner Pies is a near-certainty for a bar-to-bar clash with no quarter given. In the Three-Wheeler Open A class, DeCrescente and Pies engaged in a broadsliding battle that saw them using every inch of the Camp Lockett course. It wasn’t until nearly the end of the main event that DeCrescente eluded Pies and then hung on for the win, with Pies coming in second and the unswerving Mathew Carrick in third.

Saturday’s main event for Senior Vet Over 50 Expert contestants was a battle royale involving Honda riders Chris Osborn, Ben Meyer and Jeff Apple. Osborn launched perfectly at the flag start, leading the pack into turn one. With his skill using Class C traction (i.e., nonknobby) tires, Osborn guarded his lines in classic short-track style and sped to the win, followed by Meyer and Apple.

The Saturday race schedule featured the return of the crowd-pleasing Pull-Start Minibike class. Comprised of mostly rigid-frame machines with centrifugal clutch motors, the tiny-wheeled bikes barreled around the course in impressive style. Ron Wood emerged with the main-event win, followed by Tait Guthrie and Gar Wood.

The powerful Quad ATV division is also a spectator favorite, due to its close competition.

In the Quad Open A main event, the top three finishers were so close to one another, they could have been covered with a tarp. Ricardo Gonzalez weathered the substantial challenges of Honda riders Eric Hartell and Jay Gorum to take a well-earned first place.

The Kart classes were again present, in a variety of engine size and age groups. Their ultra-low height permit high speeds around the track, although the chance of a spinout is always present should traction falter.

On Sunday, the Kart Four-Stroke Open A final saw Jason Bishop, Randi Vian and Craig Crossland put on an impressive show with controlled slides and smooth driving styles. At the checkers, it was Bishop with the win, followed by Vian and Crossland.
