The fifth round of the CALVMX/ 100% Vintage Motocross Series saw the cavalcade of classic racers descending on Southern California’s oldest circuit to stay in continuous operation, Perris Raceway. Dating back to the 1950s, the course has evolved from a smooth TT/ scrambles course to an outdoor motocross venue that provides both a main “modern-style” course and a tamed-down “Vet” course. Track officials modified the Vet track to accommodate the machines from the vintage and post-vintage eras.

In tribute to the men and women serving in all branches of America’s armed forces, materials were provided for all in attendance who wished to send a message of thanks and best wishes to an individual soldier. As an added bonus, CALVMX member Tim Vasquez surprised the crowd with a fly-over in a World War II-era North American AT-6 he had booked for the occasion. Vasquez could be seen waving from the rear seat of the iconic aircraft as it passed low over the Perris racecourse, trailing smoke from its onboard smoke generator.

On the track, Maico stalwart Norm Himaka returned to the top of the podium with an overall win in the Over 60 Vintage Intermediate class.

In the first moto, Himaka and CZ-mounted Alan Cheever vied for the top spot on the challenging Perris course. Cheever emerged with the moto win, ahead of Himaka, with CZ rider Craig Walker taking the third spot.

Alan Cheever (463) would end up as runner-up in the Over 60 Vintage Intermediate class.

Himaka and Cheever resumed their duel for the overall spot in the second moto. Himaka timed the flag start perfectly and emerged from the tight first turn with the lead. Cheever rapidly tucked in behind Himaka, while Walker pursued them both, a few bikelengths behind the two front-runners. Himaka kept his classic German mount at the front of the pack to notch both the moto win and the overall victory, while Cheever’s 1-2 scores landed him second overall, followed by Walker in third.
