It’s been an accepted fact that traditional outdoor motocross is one of the most physically demanding sports in the world. Be it at the Amateur or Professional level, challenges await both racers and machines The sixth round of the 2017 CALVMX/ 100% Vintage Motocross Series bolstered the sport’s reputation.

Glen Helen’s REM/ Vet track played host to the latest round of CALVMX racing. An exceedingly Vintage-friendly course greeted the riders, while ample watering throughout the day kept dust to a minimum. The Vintage Racing caravan also encountered a large dose of Southern California heat, with a hefty amount of humidity thrown in for good measure. It was obvious that this round would not be a Sunday trail ride.

Honda-mounted Marty Eisen brushed off the heat wave and powered his way to 1-1 moto scores to take the overall win in the Vintage Over 50 Novice division, followed by fellow Honda rider Scott Poncher. CZ stalwart Tim Vasquez took the final podium spot.

Demonstrating that more than six decades of life isn’t a deterrent to pounding laps on a motocross track, Chuck DeRan powered his pristine yellow-colored Yamaha MX360 to his own double-moto sweep, in the Over 60 Vintage Intermediate class.

In the first moto, DeRan blitzed into the lead and kept both Maico-mounted Gary Kortz and CZ rider Craig Walker behind him to procure the moto win.

Craig Walker (295) would end up as runner-up in the Over 60 Vintage Intermediate class.

Kortz was a DNS in the second moto, which saw DeRan repeat his holeshot to the front of the pack, ahead of Walker. DeRan never put a wheel wrong throughout the moto as he sped to both the moto win and overall victory. Walker used his 3-2 score to nab second overall.

Yamaha-mounted Michael Wizmer was the absolute wizard of the Over 50 GP Intermediates.

In the first moto, Wizmer gated perfectly and roared up the starting-straight hill, ahead of the pack that was comprised of mixed divisions of Post-Vintage GP machinery. Shadowing Wizmer was Yamaha rider Billy Nielson and Honda jockey James Youngblood. Wizmer put in five flawless laps to take the moto win with roughly a 20-second lead over second-place finisher Nielson and third-place finisher Youngblood.

James Youngblood (820) was third overall in the Over 50 GP Intermediate clash.

Due to the intense heat, the second set of motos were reduced to four laps, in the interest of rider safety. Wizmer repeated his first-moto holeshot and roared to the front of the pack again. Neither the heat nor the challenging Glen Helen course had any effect on Wizmer, as he again powered his way to a dominant moto win and the overall victory. Nielson and Youngblood repeated their first-moto placings to clinch second and third overall, respectively, in the class.
