Former AMA Grand National Champion Joe Kopp struck eastern Washington gold once again at the Rattler’s Run round of the AHRMA/ Preston Petty National Vintage MX Series, held just outside of Spokane, Washington, as the rider from nearby Mica was the dominant force in the Expert portion of the program, much like he’s been for the past several years now.

Although he wasn’t as dominant as in previous years, Kopp did take home the Sportsman 250cc and Premier Open Twin Expert wins on this picture-perfect day for racing.

Kopp fell one moto short of what could have been a three-class win tally after encountering problems with his usually trusty Maico, which led to a DNF in the first Sportsman 500cc Expert moto, which was won by Washington’s Mike Musch. Another Maico pilot, Californian Zane Amaro, placed second in the 10-rider class at moto’s end.

Maico-mounted Joe Kopp (3) didn’t finish the opening Sportsman 500 Exert moto at Spokane but came back to win moto two.

While Kopp did come back to dominate moto two, his first-moto DNF left him well outside of the top three overall: Busch, Amaro, and another of the many California riders to make the trek north, Jim Buckalew, who used 5-4 finishes to put his Honda into third overall.

One of the day’s largest classes was the 21-rider Over 60 Intermediate class, which was won by Montana’s Mike Brubaker. CZ rider Brubaker’s second-moto win earned him the top position, as he held first-moto winner Dan Galloway at bay. Galloway, who made the trek from Edmonton, Alberta – he was one of a handful of Canadian entrants on hand – saw his overall win fade away after the moto-two shootout that went Brubaker’s way. Galloway finished ahead of Yamaha rider Kenny Conrad (3-3), Oregonians Mark Baer (4-4) and Terry Dale (5-5), and Kawasaki jockey George Baseley (10-6), who placed sixth overall.

There was a large contingent of Early Sportsman Stock (ESS) class riders on hand at the Spokane event – much higher than at most of the other Northwest events this season. Baer, riding a 1970 CZ 250, won the 250cc Intermediate class, beat rivals Stan Clayton and Sam Dale to post his lone win of the day in what was a three-class quest.

CZ-mounted Mark Baer (67U) won the Early Sportsman Stock Intermediate class with a 1-1 sweep at Spokane.

BSA-mounted Gary Gronow thumped to dual moto wins in the ESS 500cc Expert class, followed by Californian Jeff Mullins and Oregon’s Cliff Mee. Meanwhile, Doug Brown copped a win in the Intermediate portion, followed by Peter Jorgensen and Kleeve Hodson, both riding BSA machines.

Californian Jeff Mullins (4X) won the Premier Lightweight Expert class and placed second in the Early Sportsman Stock (ESS) 500cc Expert class at Spokane.

Kopp’s day was finalized after his win in the Sportsman 250cc Expert class, in which he finished ahead of fellow flat-tracker Wyatt Maguire and CZ-mounted Brett Giboney, and his win in the Premier Open Twin Expert class, aboard a Triumph, leading Norton pilot Kelly Shane and Tri-BSA-hybrid-mounted Dirk Murphy to victory.

Triumph-mounted Californian Kelly Shane (638) placed second, behind Joe Kopp, in the Premier Open Twin Expert class at the Spokane round of the AHRMA National Vintage MX Series.

Penton rider Mickey Sergeant was a double-class winner on the day after picking up the overall Classic 125cc and 100cc Expert victories.

Local rider Steve Liberty piloted his Husqvarna to the overall 250cc and Over 40 Intermediate wins to join Sergeant and a small handful of riders to log dual overall wins.
