Great weather welcomed the CALVMX flat-trackers as they met for round five of the 2017 CALVMX/ 100% Flat Track Regional Series. As always, classes for two-, three- and four-wheeled vehicles were offered, attracting a wide variety of machinery and riders.

On Saturday, the youngsters led off the day with their set of heat races and finals for riders 12 and under on machines 100cc or less and 50cc or less.

In the finals, Cobra-mounted Curtis Nugent blitzed his way to the main-event win in the Youth (12 and Under) Beginner 0-50cc class, with KTM-mounted Kyle Weismann taking second. Sharing the track, Mathew Savoy topped the Youth (12 and Under) Beginner 0-100cc class, while Yamaha pilot Brody Porst topped the Youth (12 and Under) Open Novice class.

Honda was the star of the Senior Vet Over 50 Expert final, as the top three riders were all on machines from Soichiro Honda’s factory. Steve Kukla powered his way into the lead, ahead of Chris Osborn and Jeff Apple. Osborn and Kukla engaged in a bar-to-bar duel, with Osborn moving into the lead at the halfway point of the race. Kukla and Apple pressured Osborn, who stayed focused on his way to the win, followed by Kukla and Apple.

The Collie family have been regulars at CALVMX flat-track races since the first event. On Saturday, brothers Larry and Braydin Collie faced off in the Youth (16 & Under) Open Intermediate class. Larry timed the flag start perfectly and led the way into turn one, trailed by Braydin. Though Braydin kept the pressure on Larry, the latter remained flawless on his way to the main-event win.

The always popular Kart classes were again out in force on both days. On Saturday, Pat Donahue topped the Open 125cc A division with a smooth driving style that saw him leading from the end of the pace lap to the finish. Everett Hartsuyker took second.

Heavy winds played havoc with the track surface during the Sunday segment of the race weekend. At times during the day, it seemed that the water truck was recording as many laps as the racers.

The Three-Wheeler Open classes were run together in one final.

In the A division, Mathew Carrick rocketed off the line to lead Tom Decrescente onto the back straight. In a display of perfect traction and horsepower, Decrescente caught and passed Carrick as the two began their broadslides into turns three and four. Carrick made a valiant effort to keep pace with Decrescente, but there was no stopping the veteran racer, who sped to the main-event win.

Chris Roysdon and Karen Gariepy staged a rematch of their duel on Saturday in the Powder Puff Novice final on Sunday. Gariepy led early in the race, with Roysdon close behind. Gariepy stayed low on the track, protecting the inside line, while Roysdon used a midtrack-line strategy.

As the two entered the front straight and headed toward the checkered flag, Roysdon’s vintage Yamaha powered past Gariepy’s modern Kawasaki KX two-stroke for the win.

Once again, the Quad Open A finale was the most hotly contested race of the weekend. The staggered start saw Kawasaki jockey Everett Hartsuyker taking the lead, with Yamaha rider Eric Hartell and Suzuki jockey Kevin Ellsworth close behind. Hartsuyker kept his cool against the aggressive challenges of his pursuers and managed to hang on to his lead. Near the halfway point of the race, the red flags came out because the cones lining the infield corners had gotten scattered onto the course.

On the restart, savvy veteran Hartell timed the flag drop perfectly and grabbed the lead. Going down the back straight, Hartsuyker stayed within inches of Hartell’s rear wheels, while Ellsworth was using his distinctive riding style of extreme body English to keep his screaming Suzuki “Quadzilla” in third. Hartell was once again the master of the class and crossed the finish line with a hard-earned win, followed by Hartsuyker and Ellsworth.

Eric Hartell (121K) won a hard-earned victory in Sunday’s Quad Open A final.
