Extreme dust and technical single-track stood no chance against these Northern California racers at round nine of the AMA Kenda/ SRT West Hare Scrambles Championship Series. Battles between Kacy Martinez and Sharon Mowell, as well as Max Gerston and Trystan Hart, kept spectators on their toes as they watched from the toughest sections, such as The Slab, Dirty Jersey, and Spectator Hill, where rocks seemed to pose the biggest challenges. District 36 and Garrahan Off-Road Training once again did not disappoint while hosting the Donner Hare Scrambles.

Women
The first race of the day on Sunday was for the Women’s A, B and C classes. Riders such as FMF KTM Factory rider Kacy Martinez were poised on the start line with Sharon Mowell, Kaitlyn Jacobs and Brianna Vinsenhaler, making for a line-up of talented competition! It seemed like the women racers hardly faced a challenge while climbing sections such as The Slab.

Martinez quickly stole the lead and held her place for the first two laps, though Mowell was creeping up on her each lap. Mowell battled it out with Martinez on the course, but when Vinsenhaler joined in the fray, Mowell was pushed back to third.

The Women’s podium saw Kacy Martinez (center) in first, with Brianna Vinsenhaler (left) in second and Sharon Mowell (right) in third.

Pro 250
Right from the start of the Pro 250cc contest, SRT-backed J.T. Baker and Cole Conatser proved their skill while having a holeshot battle off of the downhill start and into the sharp right-hand turn. Conatser secured the holeshot and tried to gain a nice lead, but Baker was back to battling in no time.

Baker and Clayton Gerstner were coming out of the pits and into the scoring chute within seconds of each other. Gerstner won the battle and held the first-place position for three laps. Then Baker turned up the heat and came out of this battle on top, with Gerstner in second and Conatser in third.

Winner J.T. Baker, runner-up Clayton Gerstner and third-place finisher Cole Conatser comprised the Pro 250cc podium.

Pro
With such a heavy line-up of Pros for the last race of the weekend, the race fans were anxious about the outcome, to say the very least. When the green flag was waved to signal the riders off the line, FMF KTM Factory rider Cody Webb seemed to have the lead secure. However, Webb went down after he lost stability in the sharp right-hand turn, allowing Anson Maloney to take the holeshot.

Nevertheless, it was Factory Beta rider Max Gerston who was the first to come off of lap one, with Webb only five seconds behind him. Due to bike difficulties, Webb’s race came to an end after he came through the pits after lap two.

Max Gerston (15) led the race for a while but ended up as runner-up.

Gaining time on the leader, SRT-backed Trystan Hart and Gas Gas-backed Joey Fiasconaro swapped second and third between themselves. It was not long before Hart picked up speed and caught up to Gerston and took over the lead, pushing Gerston back to second place. Meanwhile, Purvines DA8 Racing-backed Axel Pearson fought his way from ninth place to fourth place, behind Joey Fiasconaro in third.

The Pro podium saw winner Trystan Hart (center) on the top step, with Max Gerston (left) in second and Joey Fiasconaro (right) in third.

District 36 and Garrahan Off-Road Training could not have put on a better event at the Donner Ski Ranch. Spectators and racers attended a race that was well worth any drive. With beautiful scenery, technical terrain, and plenty of spectator area, race fans are certainly looking forward to the next Donner Hare Scrambles!
