The gathering of the clan…

The gathering of the clan…

The soft “step, clump” of steel-shoe-shod boots were heard one last time at Camp Lockett Event and Equestrian Facility in 2017, as the CALVMX/100% Flat Track Series concluded its six-round series. The two-day event featured a profusion of two-, three- and four-wheeled machines taking to the one-sixth-mile oval bearing riders ranging from 4-year-old Lily Rose Bishop on up to the seasoned 50-years-old-and-older Experts.

The morning line-up.

The morning line-up.

Race machines ranged from karts, quads and three-wheelers to bikes ranging from modern motocross machines to minicycles and purpose-built flat-trackers such as the Yamaha Banshee-powered machine built by Steve Kukla and ridden by Larry Collie; the wail through its twin expansion chambers was eerily reminiscent of the legendary Kenny Roberts TZ-700 machine from 1975. Kukla commented that getting the gearing sorted for a short course was an ongoing project.

Steve Kukla (16) was the winner of the ’70s Singles Expert class on both days.

The Three-Wheelers are ready to roar!

Saturday’s finals began with the three-wheeler classes.

In the Three-Wheeler Open A division, Mathew Carrick started perfectly and roared into the lead, trailed by Kyle Hearold. Finessing his lanky frame perfectly while navigating the oval, Carrick sped uncontested to victory, with Hearold taking second.

Sharing the track with the A division was the Open B division, in which Julian Hoefert took the win.

Meanwhile, Ashley Palmer took the top spot in the Women’s Open B division.

Five-year-old Curtis Nugent seems to gain more speed with every outing at the Camp Lockett events. In the Youth 12 and Under Open contest, Nugent overcame having to start on the penalty line to take a dominant win. Mathew Savoy, Brody Porst and Nick Arguley crossed the line behind him.

Nugent added to his win total by also topping the Youth 12 and Under 51cc Beginner class, followed by Vance Welder. Lili Rose Bishop, her mount sporting training wheels and all, took a popular third.

Lili Rose Bishop (100) let her machine – and her training wheels – carry her to a third-place finish in the Youth 12 and Under 51cc Beginner class.

Chris Roysdon and Karen Gariepy resumed their duel in the Powder Puff Intermediate class on Saturday. At the start of their main, Roysdon emerged with the lead as the pack funneled onto the back straight. Gariepy stayed within a bikelength of Roysdon as the race progressed.

Roysdon kept the lead until literally the last turn on the last lap. That was when Gariepy made her move with a burst of power and perfect traction to power into the lead, taking the checkers just barely in front of Roysdon.

Since the inception of the CALVMX Flat Track Series, the Quad Open A class has never failed to excite the spectators.

In Saturday’s main event, Eric Hartell vied with Everett Hartsuke for the top spot. Following a restart due to cones being scattered on the course, Hartell led down the back straightaway. Hartsuke held on to second as Hartell extended his lead.

Nearing the end of the race, however, Hartsuke began to close on Hartell, and by the white-flag lap he was within a bikelength of Hartell. Despite the fact that Hartsuke was closing in, Hartell never faltered, and he took the win, with Hartsuke and Mike Weaver finishing second and third, respectively.

Sunday’s series finale saw another healthy turnout of entrants, with good weather as a bonus. Preliminary heat races went off with minimal delays, and after a brief track-prep session, the finals got under way, with the Three-Wheelers again leading off the program.

In the Open A class, Saturday’s main-event winner, Mathew Carrick, faced off against Tom Decrescente. At the start, Decrescente pitched his trike sideways into the first turn and led the rest of the field down the back straight, with Carrick and Tyler Perrin giving pursuit. The race was red-flagged when Open B competitor Julian Hoefert high-sided his trike, luckily without serious injury.

On the restart, Carrick nailed the holeshot, taking the lead. Decrescente was close behind. Decrescente pressured Carrick until the very end, but Carrick never faltered and took the win.

In the turn.

Vance Welder added his name to the winners’ list as he topped the Youth 12 and Under 51cc Beginners’ final. Welder dueled with lady racer Summer Kukla throughout the race before pulling a slight lead on his way to the checkered flag. Finishing an impressive third and fourth were the two youngest riders, Lili Rose Bishop and then Wyatt Kukla, who was aboard a vintage Suzuki JR-50.

The Kart classes had a good number of entries in their various divisions. In the Open 125cc A class, Everett Hartsuke traded handlebars for a steering wheel and took the main-event win, over Tanner Donahue and Pat Donahue.

On the track at the same time, Marty Wolf topped the 125cc B class, and Jason Bishop powered his way to the top in Four-Stroke Adult A contest, ahead of Craig Crossland.

In the two-wheeled divisions, the Open Bike Expert Class C Traction contest featured a three-way match among Byron Kukla, Jeff Apple and Daltin Collie. At the wave of the green flag, Kukla exploded off the line and into the lead. Behind Kukla, Apple and Collie sparred for second. Kukla had everything go his way during the race and he powered his way to a flag-to-flag victory, followed by Apple and Collie.

Jeff Apple (27) finished up as runner-up in Sunday’s Open Bike Expert Class C Traction contest.

CALVMX’s 2017 Flat Track Series proved highly successful. With a policy of providing a class for essentially any machine, every event featured a wide variety of vehicles. Plans for the 2018 season are already in the works and will be announced shortly, along with the CALVMX Vintage Motocross schedule.
