Former Speedway racer “Mad Mike” Hughes had to cancel his launch of a self–engineered steam rocket on Saturday, November 5, in Amboy, California. He wanted to reach a height from which he could take photographs to prove that the earth is flat.

There was a disagreement with the Bureau of Land Management regarding permits. [According to the BLM, Hughes had not bothered to contact them about his intention to launch a self-made rocket from public land… Editor]

Hughes constructed a launch pad out of a motorhome. This was not his first attempt to get the steam rocket in the air.
