Southern California’s oldest racetrack in continuous operation played host to the final round of the 2017 CALVMX/ 100% Vintage Motocross season. With the majority of its core members present, the classic machines from the late 1960s to the mid-’90s took to the well-sorted Perris Vet track for their final motos of 2017.

The season finale saw the club pay tribute to one of its longest-participating members, Ed Tashjian. Seriously injured in a ghastly crash earlier this year, Tashjian used determination and physical therapy to make a remarkable recovery. Greeted warmly by all present, Tashjian was visibly moved by the tribute in his honor.

Maico-mounted Norm Himaka wrapped up his season in fine style, sweeping both motos of the Over 60 Vintage Intermediate class. Having effortlessly transitioned into the sixth-decade ranks, Himaka emerged with the lead as the pack exited the first turn at the start of moto one. Behind Himaka, the CZs of Craig Walker and Dana Yenawine shadowed him in second and third, respectively. By the midpoint of the race, Himaka had a sizable lead over the rest of the pack. Himaka sped to the finish unchallenged, with Walker and Yenawine rounding out the top three finishers.

Nick Awtry wrapped up his 2017 season on a positive note with a strong performance in the Vintage Sportsman 250cc Intermediate class. Mounted on an example of the iconic silver-tanked Honda Elsinore, Awtry led the way in both motos on his way to the overall victory.

In the first moto, Awtry moved into the lead as the pack progressed into the back section of the Perris course. In pursuit of Awtry were Craig Walker, Jim Barker and Dana Yenawine. Multiple classes share the track in Vintage racing, and Awtry was soon leading the entire field. Awtry was never challenged for the lead and easily took the moto win, ahead of Walker and Yenawine.

CALVMX’s 2018 Vintage racing series will begin on February 3 at Perris Raceway. The club welcomes any machine and riders of any skill level to join in the fun of classic racing.
