This Saturday, January 13, the second round of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series will be held in NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas.

THEN
The first 450SX-class race held in Houston was on March 15, 1974. Jim Pomeroy won that race on a Bultaco.

From 1974 to 2002, the Houston Supercross was held in the Houston Astrodome. Throughout those seasons, the Astrodome hosted 36 races, including doubleheaders from 1977 to 1983. From 2003 to 2015, the Houston Supercross was held in NRG Stadium.

This Saturday’s event will be the 50th time the gate will drop for a 450SX-class race in Houston.

The first 250SX-class race held in Houston was on April 20, 1985. Eddie Warren won that race on a Kawasaki.

Travis Preston gave Husqvarna its first 250SX-class victory by winning in Houston in 2001. Husky has added six wins to that tally since, all of them coming in the 2016 and 2017 seasons.

This will be the 32nd time the gate will drop for a 250SX-class race in Houston.

In 2013, Blake Wharton broke a 17-season Houston Winless drought for Suzuki in the 250SX class. That remains the brand’s only win in Houston in either class since 1995.

NOW
450SX

Marvin Musquin is on a winning streak, having won every race since scoring his million-dollar purse on the Monster Energy Cup. As KTM Factory Racing’s premier rider, this season Musquin will be looking to prove his worth as a first-time Supercross champion.

Justin Barcia garnered his first Supercross podium in years as a fill-in rider for the Monster Energy/ Knich/ Yamaha factory squad. The two-tome 250SX Eastern Regional SX Champion is aiming to make his mark in the 450SX class.

250SX
Shane McElrath took his second consecutive Anaheim opener win in the 250SX Western Regional class. After finishing second overall in the 2017 season, McElrath is a promising contender to stay at the front of the pack.

With a stacked Western Regional 250SX class – as shown at the first round in Anaheim, California – Monster Energy/ Pro Circuit/ Kawasaki teammates Joey Savatgy and Adam Cianciarulo, as newcomers from the East Coast, are among those facing all-new competition and venues.
